Did you see Eat Pray Love yet?
It will make you want to catch the next flight out for Bali...
It made me want to run back to Brazil... And not just because Javier Bardem (who is Spanish) plays such a terrific Brasileiro. But the EAT PRAY LOVE soundtrack has at least 3 Brazilian songs that break your heart.9. Samba Da Bençáo / Bebél Gilberto 4:47
10. Wave / João Gilberto 4:42
12. 'S Wonderful / João Gilberto 4:11
Especially if you went to Brazil 5 times in the '80's and haven't been back...
About a week ago I went to see FELA and they insist the audience get up and dance, which is alot like being back in Brazil again...
Even Francois Simon of Le Figaro is talking about Brazilian food this weekend, so maybe the stars are aligning and trying to tell me something? The food in Brazil is unbelievable! The fruitas! OMG You can get avocado milkshakes on most street corners in Rio, while hanging out in your bikini... And the meat! I don't eat much meat anymore, but in Brazil, I would eat it everyday... You put a kind of salsa on the meat called Brazilian vinegrette...

Wendy said...In 2006, I met Carla daudt, a girl who studied patisserie in Paris and now sells macarons here in Rio! The result of this was that in marriage I contracted a table full of macarons instead of the traditional pastries. It was a success! So I went searching in the bottom of my closet for the one lone souvenir left from my 5 trips to Brazil... This tiny vintage' bikini which hasn't a snowballs chance of fitting me anymore. BUMBUM IPANEMA is still in business though... Can we arrange an exchange BUMBUM?
I don't think I ever had the nerve to wear this anywhere. Not even the crazy beautiful beaches of Brazil...
I do think I could fit into Gisele's flip flops though...

ReplyDeleteJust saw the movie this past weekend and yes, Javier Bardem was perfect *though I really wanted to give him a bath, nice thought* and while I'm not Brazilian, I grew up listening to my folks play Joao Gilberto and doing the samba...And I'd walk the beach in a cute coverup just so I could have one of those avocado milkshakes!

Hi, I'm Olivia from Brazil, and I loved your blog. I want to present mine: www.inandotdecor.blogspot.com

Your blog post today made me smile—which they usually do. Speaking of avocados, on my last visit to Hawaii, I had a delicious slice of avocado pie at a local restaurant on the island of Kauai. Much to my delight, the April 2010 issue of Food Network’s magazine included a recipe. I made it and it is truly heaven!
ReplyDeleteà bientôt!

Avocado Pie
For the Crust:
• 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
• 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
• 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
• Pinch of salt
For the Filling:
• 2 medium hass avocados
• 1 8-ounce package cream cheese, at room temperature
• 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
• 2 1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
• 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
• Pinch of salt
• Whipped cream or confectioners' sugar, for garnish (optional)
Make the crust: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Brush an 8-inch springform pan with some of the melted butter. Mix the remaining butter with the graham cracker crumbs, sugar and salt in a bowl. Press the mixture into the bottom and up the sides of the prepared pan. Bake until golden brown, about 15 minutes. Cool completely on a rack.
Make the filling: Halve and pit the avocados, then scoop out the flesh and chop. Transfer to a bowl, add the cream cheese and beat with a mixer on medium speed until smooth. Add the condensed milk, lime and lemon juices, and the salt and beat until fluffy, scraping the bowl as needed.
Pour the filling into the crust, press a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface and chill at least 4 hours.
Remove the springform ring and slice the pie. Garnish with whipped cream or confectioners' sugar, if desired, and serve immediately (the top will start to brown as the pie sits).

I just saw it this weekend. Love when the man in an Italian barbershop says Americans know entertainment, but they don’t know pleasure, Julia Roberts' no shame declaration of enjoying pizza and not thinking about the calories, and her almost religious experience while eating spaghetti.
ReplyDeleteI'm a first time commenter on your blog, but have been enjoying it for a few months after a fellow Francophile sent it to me. Really enjoy the visual feast of your posts!
Whoops! Yes, I saw Eat, Pray, Love with a girlfriend and loved it. We decided that "Eat" and "Love" were fabulous, though "Pray" was a bit tedious...perhaps I just haven't reached that part of my life's journey yet. Anyway, Javier Bardem certainly stole the show! Oh, and I loved your Brazilian themed post!
ReplyDeleteHi! I'm brazilian too (I live in Goiania, near to Brasilia) and always read PB! I'm happy to see this brazilian post, I love Rio...
ReplyDeleteWoohoo, that was a fun post!
ReplyDeleteI always get the travel bug bad in the Fall. This has been on my list since I saw Anthony Bourdain's episode on Sao Paulo.
Happy Monday morning to you:)
Cheers!
J.
Maybe the stars ARE aligning. Would you believe that the next World Congress on Art Deco is going to be in Rio next summer? I'm most excited to go.

ReplyDeleteOi Carol,
ReplyDeletenow it might get complicated.....I'm a Swede, brought up with many different cultures. One of them is as a student of Portuguese in Rio, living the life of a Carioca. Before that there was school in Paris for some years. Miss that ....
Eu tambem sinto saudade do Brasil.
I also love the Brasilian music and my bookshelf is stuffed with old vinyls....Nina Simone, Rita Lee, Gilberto Gil, Roberto Carlos, the list is long. Thank God for Spotify!!!!!
You've been on my blogroll for some tiime, love reading your posts. My first comment though.....
I have to see this film when it's due in mid October here in Sweden. There is a young talented Swedish actress playing a part, Tuva Novotny.
Parabens,
Ingela
Now I really have to listen to some samba!!

ReplyDeleteCarol, you obviously have made some Brasilians happy today! Excellent. I want to see that movie! I wish I'd have time. If I don't get a chance to see it at the theater, I'll have to rent it when it comes out. So busy now. It's supposed to be good!
ReplyDeleteGreetings,
ReplyDeleteAnd, as usual, well done.

Hi Carole: must go see that film - and avocado milk-shakes!! yes I'd definitely try but not in my bikini
ReplyDeletenon non!!

I found it funny when you say "Saudade" (so-dag-ji) with a heavy accent from the Southeast/South regions of Brazil. Saudade is in fact "so-dag-dee" if you want to say it correctly. The same goes to Vodka, when Brazilians coming from the South would say "Vodjika" - Wonderful post!
ReplyDeleteI'm brazilian and love your blog!!!!
ReplyDeleteBeijos!!
*sigh*
ReplyDeleteCarol,
ReplyDeleteMakes me want to pull out my Bossa Nova dvd!
Great movie if you haven't seen it.
Hi Carol.
ReplyDeleteIt's not so easy to find your post Alice, I would love to see it, but it isn't my work.
That you choose that, it must be marvelous. When was that?
You can write me to bruxadamontanha.arte@gmail.com if you want.
I was in Paris for years, lived in Germany and Holland. It was a very good time.

Hi Carol...
ReplyDeleteWOW! I had NO idea you have been to Brasil and visited sooo many different places there-- I feel like I'm part Brasilian-- meu corasao - because I grew up listening to Brasilian music and have been very close to the Brasiian community in San Diego for many years and for dancing EVERY Sunday night at Cafe Sevilla in San Diego- on Brasilian night for YEARS!!!!
I feel this Saudade for those times--- my Brasilian times/friends...

Hi! I am already a big fan of your bolg and I am even more!
ReplyDeleteI am a brazilian living in the USA since 1987 and I have a passion for Paris.
Love to see the great things about Brazil in your blog.
I was debating if I should go see EAT, PRAY, LOVE, but I am definitely going to to see it now (I didn't want to get desapointed since the book was so great...you know how those things are!).
Well, thaks for all the great posts and specially for the "SAUDADE DO BRASIL"!
Wow! How many Brazilians you gathered here!
ReplyDeleteMe too, I live in Rio, lived one year in Paris and love Paris too.
This is my first visit to your blog and it's very good.
Of course I think about going to Paris one more time.
Nice meeting you!
I will take a look at the Brazilians because I didn't know that there are so many blogging in English.
Love,
Ana
I'm afraid that Javier Bardem may not be "available", at least not immediateley. He may not give up Penelope Cruz and their new baby immediately!
ReplyDeleteI saw him in "Buitiful" a few months ago! Remarkable!!!!
I love this post. Que lindo. I am from Recife, State of Pernambuco, Brasil.
ReplyDeleteAll the best.
