I saw this NY Fall leaf sitting on a Manhattan something or other cover this morning. What do they call these things?

Two NY dogs standing on one of those whatsits as well...

NY ball park hot dogs - irresistable but I did.

I was saving myself for Sigmund's pretzel hot dogs. I've been dreaming about it for a while but if you're not in Brooklyn you have to go the Met to get one and I did this morning.

Some dreams do not come true.
Why is the sauerkraut flavored with mustard and catchup? I like my sauerkraut straight up unadulterated. Next time I'll stick with their tried and true Cheddar-Truffle pretzel - one of the best things on the planet.

Never mind. Sant Ambroeus' pistachio gelato never disappoints.

The UES/upper east side is all decked out for halloween.

Pumpkins line the fancy grocery shops.
I bought an Acorn squash yesterday to get in the swing of Fall. What should I do with it?

There are plenty of consolation prizes in the UES if your hot dog disappoints like La Maison du Chocolat's chocolate pumpkins.

You know it's Fall when the obligatory orange and yellow zinnia planters come out everywhere on the UES.Are these zinnias?

The nearby florist shop is loaded with them.

The florist's cat is having a good scratch on the decorative goards and squash for sale...

This pair of squirrels appear on upper Madison Avenue every Fall and hang around through Christmas. Then they go back in the cellar till the next Fall.

A NY UES girl walking her tiny sweatered pup.

Two little NY girls dressed in universal pink. What else?

Why do they call them MAN HOLE COVERS??

    1. THANK YOU and it's one word...
A manhole cover is a removable plate forming the lid over the opening of a manhole, to prevent anyone or anything from falling in, and to keep out unauthorized persons and material.

They date back at least to the era of ancient Rome, which had sewer grates made from stone.

      who knew??

  2. Oh I miss New York so much...especially in the Fall. Beautiful. Love the little girls in Paris Pinks!

  3. Chrysanthemums.
Loathsome, think I, but the very sign of autumn. They come large and small, all kinds of macaron colors.

    1. Thank you!
      Oh dear...
my brain is running on empty today I'm afraid...
      maybe they are mini mums?

  4. Manholes..Mums..
You have a lot of things happening there:)

It's gorgeous out these last 2 days..Can't get enough of fall~

    1. In New York it is chilly, drizzly and overcast but...

      it is FALL!

  5. Ah, what a fun walk in Manhattan. Thank you for taking us along, Carol. I particularly liked the cute little N.Y. girls en rose, and the chi-chi cha-cha with the cute pooch. Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

  6. Oh, so cute, Carol! I love your blogs. You are my muse! xo

  7. They are called Man Hole covers because they cover a hole big enough for a man to get into the underground plumbing. Not very imaginative...and definitely named before the years of women's lib. Perhaps we didn't miss much down in the sewers.
Definitely MUMS not zinnias. This leads me to believe I should start a blog about flowers. Clearly, there is a niche. :-)

  8. They are called "manhole covers"! Love the fall colors. It's turning colors here in the Pac Northwest too!

  9. Isn't it nice to have friends with the answers!

    1. I can always depend on PBers to know the answers : )
      ! ! !

  10. Manholes
    You picked a beautifully
    landscape designed Brownstone
that is to die for-groomed for all the
    seasons... it's up my block...
Looking forward to your blogs Carol!

    1. I didn't show the 'velvet' guard rope in front of that doorway : )

Acorn squash - you lucky girl!
I did some a week ago for cousins visiting from Texas (I'm in Seattle). Cut each one in half; bake cut side down for 30 minutes at 350. Then, turn over, fill with a mixture of raisins (I soaked mine in Frangelico!), chopped hazelnuts, diced apple, sprinkled with brown sugar; return to the oven at 350 and bake for another 30 minutes. SERVE to loads of compliments!!!

  12. When I was in my 20's I had a friend whose family sold manhole covers! GO figure:))

Hold on, you ate Hot dog pretzel, flavoured sauerkraut and ice cream? I'm going to be sick.

Plain, unadulterated sauerkraut all the way for me too!!

Your post made me laugh:) Happy fall dear x

  13. I love the collection of photos, Carol. You captured the "autumn in the big city' very well.
Everything, the food, people, cat, kids, gray day, came out beautifully.
I never heard of sauerkraut that was "flavored" before - I couldn't spell it before, either :)

  14. i love those squirrel statues! very art deco! such lovely colors for fall. wish we also had fall in our little tropical country

  15. You already got your chrysanthemums question answered and your manhole covers titled. So there you are. The gelato looks divine; the hot dog thingie,...not so much...beautiful fall images, Carol!

  16. Carol, your UES portrait is splendid. It is so different over on that side of Central Park. Once you get east of Lexington Avenue the look changes again, so different on the avenues and side streets.

Hoping that we have one more warm and sunny day to fully appreciate the SA gelato!

I love, love, love this post and just wanted to say thanks :)

  18. NYC has such a romantic aura. Thanks for showing some of your sights!! MANHOLE covers, you have to say it in a BIG DEEP SLO-MO VOICE. Yr first photo took them right out of the realm of the ordinary!! You've Got Mail: "Don't you just love NY in the fall?"

  19. Manhole covers are round because they can't fall into the hole that way, if they were any other shape they could fall into the hole. Some of them are quite artistic, especially those in Europe. You should start noticing them and take pictures. Acorn squash: cut in half, scrape out seeds, roast upside down with a little water until soft. Serve with butter, salt and pepper.Forget all that sugary stuff, like sauerkraut, it should be plain.

Love hearing from you
