Daffodil Sketchbook...

We're having the COLDEST DAY OF THE YEAR in New York 17°F feels like 4°FBut I'm still thinking daffodils.

I found this 2001 hand-made sketchbook while cleaning out my closet last summer.
I'd set my mind to figuring out daffodils.
I'm still working on them.
And at last you can find daffodils in the florists shops.

So it MUST be a SIGN OF SPRING not far off.

Somehow a page of Tulip petals got into my daffodil sketchbook...
There will be plenty more of these to come.
I'm intent on ignoring this cold snap :(

I found spring arrives to you (in your mind, not outside).
Well,my tiny English vocabulary finishes when it arrives to describe how wonderful, beautiful, cute, pretty, cozy those flowers you painted are.
I´d like to have them on a piece of silk and make a dress to wear them on me.
I think no one would be shy wearing that.Snif,snif...
    That´s not possible...
    I´ll continue dreaming.
    Always surprised and admiring you,
    Smila

Since finding your site through the "daily painters", I enjoy checking out the latest postings. I lived in France for 14 years and have a passion for sketchbook painting when we go back for visits. Purusing your sketchbooks was great fun. I was going to tell you that the word for stickers is "autocolant" (my kids used to collect them when we lived there), but saw that someone already gave you the word.

Thanks for the trip. I also have my French sketchbook on my web site if you want to see more views of "provence." It's a sketchbook I purchased in a little art store in Sanary right on the Mediteranean. www.jerieartz.com.

  4. Daffodils in the stores are such sweet harbingers of spring. I love the sketches you are showing us today, and I am looking forward to more.

Ilva's comment brought the lines of that beautiful Wordsworth back to me:

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
    A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
    ()
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
    Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
    And dances with the daffodils.

    Wishing you spring soon,
    M.

My hat is pulled down to my muffler.
That's how cold it is here and I'm talking indoors.
    Woe is moi...

Awesome post today. Daffodils and Sketching. Love it.
Nothing speaks of Spring more then the yellow Daffodil. They are the first thing to bloom after the cold of winter here in Oregon...You can see them blooming on everyones property right now. The bonus to the beauty is that Deer hate them. ;-)
Think I am going to be sketching some daffodils today... at least trying to ..;-)

Carol, I sympathize with you on the cold. I thought we were freezing to death at 17 degrees this winter.. compared to you right now, we were having a heatwave. The thing to do is get out the paints and paint more spring flowers and chocolate. Paint the flowers.. eat the chocolates you wont even notice the cold. ;-)

Argh! I come over in perfect innocence from my comments section and find what? Candy and sweets! No wonder apples seem like diet food to you! Compared to macarons and chocolate bunnies, foie gras is dietetic.

  9. At least you know that Spring will be Spring like. Unlike me who knows it will be winter like as usual. Lovely collection from your sketch books.

  11. Lovely daffodils! Here, just outside Manchester, England, we've got loads of them open already. And I saw (cherry?) trees blooming today. Seems like a very early spring to me!

Keeping thinking warm thoughts and making beautiful paintings, please!

They are still far away up north here where I live. Your sketches was a fresh breath of colour in a Norwegian winter's day.

Meanwhile, up in Canada, it was 60F (15C) today! SIXTY! The birds were singing, the cheery blossoms were blooming and the tulips are coming up. Positively Balmy!

But that's Vancouver...I bet the rest of Canada is freezing it's ass off :P HA!

Spring is in the air when we see the first daffodils of the season...and we all are ready to jump in the air on springs...

As a matter of fact, in the language of flowers, the daffodil refers to melancholia and the affection of the mind...

I'm pleased you picked the first symbolic image!
I like your watercolours... the budding ones are my favourites!

  19. Wonderful! It's all springy here in northern California. Everything is budding or blooming already even though it doesn't seem like we've had that much winter yet. I love your daffodil sketchbook and the way you're taking them apart to see how they're made.
