First stop at patisserie Secco
To say 'Merci mille fois' to the mere of my baby buchette
Outside the sun is shining brightly on New Year's day.
But don't think for a second you can leave the house without a brolly.
Mot of the day - parapluie (umbrella or for rain). Absolutely essential at all times in Paris!
1st day of the month run get your carte navigo filled for 65,10€ (save about 15€). You can take 50 trips in one day on the buses and the metro = no limit.
What to wear in Metro?
Co-ordinate with the vending machines.
Dog of the day seen on the Metro to Saint Sulpice.
Walking round in the rain the streets are empty of sane people on New Year's day. You'll have it to yourself and spot things like this beautiful carousel in front of eglise Saint Sulpice.
Today I'm off to catch an exhibit of the architect who designed many Paris libraries at Cite de l'Architecture.
And try to find this Metro mug spotted in a closed shop window last night.
BONNE JOURNEE!
Oh,I missed the exhibit on the architect of libraries on my November trip..It was on my to do list;-(
ReplyDeletePlease tell us more.
Again the aquarelle is so special..Have you seen the square umbrellas there?
ReplyDeleteI love that caroussel!
Loved Amelie Poulain..she is so darn cute and adorable.Love her.

I am loving your new daily activity blogs. So fun. I've been tuning in to PB for a long time now. I never think to comment. I just enjoy I suspect there are many more like me. Lets me feel like I'm there. Thanks Carol. BTW, our names are almost identical. I plan to have you paint both of my dogs this year!!
ReplyDeleteI found a mug like that at La Vaisellerie on rue de Rennes. Five euros! Also got some of those miniature lions head soup bowls that they use for serving sauces in restaurants for one euro. Haven't served a sauce that needed a little bowl since we've been home but they make me happy every time I open the kitchen cabinet. Use the mug every day though.

Hi Carol,
ReplyDeleteYour post today made me smile. I remember the very first French class I had and I fell in LOVE with the word parapluie. Such a musical word and much more fun to walk in the rain under a parapluie than a plain old umbrella. My favorite parapluie has little frogs all over it and is really meant for children...not for 66-year old women...but I don't care. I love it and I use it.
Wish it were raining here today so I could go walking outside with my parapluie.
Uh, didn't I tell you I love using the word parapluie?

It's funny how a city especially Paris, in the rain & all lit up looks so much nicer than the rain pouring down & dripping from the trees in the country. Hope you always have your parapluie tucked in your bag at the ready.
ReplyDeleteDoes look pretty damn wet!
ReplyDeleteox
Pluie, pluie et parapluie...(beginning of a children's rhyme) I'm loving your glimpses of Paris, oh, that carousel, & the metro...Paris in the rain, you & Woody Allen & Midnight in Paris...Here, all white white cold bright snow!
ReplyDeletethanks for the shot of "my" metro station..Vavin...happy new year Carol
ReplyDeleteYow! I just read in Wall St. Journal that a Paris Apple store was robbed on new year's eve! Hope they don't think you've been casing the joint...
ReplyDeleteLove your drawing on the lined paper. Wonderful journal page. Love the glimpses you shared and the Carousel in the rain is fabulous.
ReplyDeleteCarol, I am sure that you know that vintage film, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg? I actually have a record that includes all its original very romantic tunes.
ReplyDeleteNo matter the weather, I am really enjoying the opportunity you give us to see a new year unfold in Paris. (I've also made a note about obtaining a carte navigo at the beginning of a month...seems somehow more elegant an experience than my recharging my NYC MetroCard today.
xo
Miss seeing marrons everywhere this time of year. Happy New Year!! Hope you're enjoying Paris.
ReplyDeleteI love the opening watercolor...and the view of the sunlight on the apartments. Is that where you are staying?
ReplyDeleteThe man with the umbrella at the carousel is a stunning shot! They don't get much better than that!
LOVE your new first watercolour treats;) really 'vivante'!!

ReplyDeleteYour posts are my nearly-daily Parisian oasis. Thank you!! I lived near Mº Vavin (from 2 posts below). It was fun to see the sign again.
ReplyDeleteBonne Année!
i really like reading your blog.=)
ReplyDeleteAlways a pleasure to read your poetic and funny Parisian snapshots.
ReplyDeleteTrue, living in Paris without umbrella = impossible ! (Not to mention half of the time, we forget them wherever we go)
Wishes for your best year ever in 2013, Carol!
ReplyDeleteAnd many thanks for your generous, beautiful website...always charming, informative and a spiritual lift.
Reading about coconut shards made me think straight away of custard slices with white icing on the top. Only trouble is l can't think of anything else and its 9 on a Saturday night so not much help for me. The custard slice is just in front of my eyes. Will have to go and eat a mince pie.Only thing l have.
ReplyDeleteI hope you got your Metro mug, it looks perfect. Rain in Paris is prettier than rain anywhere else.
