Ispahan Rose

As promised pre-trip, I did get to taste quite a few of Pierre Herme's Ispahan Collection.

Last Sunday, I went to meet my miniature supplier, Priscilla,
RementQueen for brunch. She was accompanied by a famed Rosarian, Clair G. Martin, Curator of the Huntington Rose Garden and our brunch turned into a rose lesson!
Yesterday I got his beautiful book in the mail, 100 Old Roses For The American Garden. Marie-Antoinette isn't holding a rose here just to look pretty. The French were instrumental in developing repeat blooming roses and future Empress Josephine encouraged her friend to develope new species of roses
No wonder Pierre Herme is obsessed with roses. The French and roses go back a long ways.
I ate this Ispahan Rose cheesecake.
I ate the Ispahan Surprise too...
I did not have the nerve to get the Saint Honore Ispahan.
Saving it for next time...
You see rose pink everywhere in Paris...
Like these tiny child's ballerinas...
Or this Anne Fontaine pink bow belt...
No wonder the French say La vie en rose...
Last weather report from Paris I heard it's still chilly and rainy...
But if I had this rose pink umbrella, would I care?

    Poor Marie Antoinette of Austria! I wonder if the French ever expressed any remorse about the way they treated her.

    You did spell Clair's name right, not a small feat.

    Your blog is always such a delight and has become a "must read" for me. As we try to turn more of our time to leisure and we are concentrating on the beautiful things in life more and the drudgery less.

  15. JEANETTEI think the "surprise" of the Ispahan Surprise is it's size. Rather than a small taffy-thing it's huge. Inside = something raspberryesque inside something meringue as I recall..which I don't :(
    I probably ate it in a fit of nerves and forgot to taste...

    Thought of you yesterday. Saw the May 2008 issue of Bon Appetite mag. It's a big issue, entirely devoted to Paris. You may find it engaging and slightly informative (if you can get a hold of one there).

  20. Hi Carol - I was just at the nursery, and I have not seen the Ispahan Rose in Southern California, but I am determined to have it in my garden.

    I just added the Diana, Princess of Wales Hybrid Tea Rose to my collection. It is soft pink with huge blooms!

    I can tell you it was COLD and wet today. I am in Paris as I type this. I even got sleeted on today! We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay! But BRRRRRR!

    I just wanted to say that I love your posts! I just arrived from a trip to Paris also, and on the morning of my departure to London I went to Pierre Herme and bought an Ispahan dessert (the large macaron with litchee and rose filling with raspberries). I ate it on the way to London and just about died. It was so indulgent, but light at the same time. I can't wait to keep reading your posts to remind me of Paris and the macarons :)
