Le Géant des Beaux-Arts, Boesner, Mamie Gateaux Brocante, Marché Bastille, Wice Writers Workshop

Yesterday I went to Géant des Beaux Arts in the 11th to get bigger watercolor paper

I want to loosen up 🤸‍♂️

And paint tulips 🌷 I got in the rain on Sunday at marché Bastille

I’ve been doing watercolor warmups on envelopes 💌 backs.

And parrots 🦜 🦜🦜 got in the mix

But I’m getting ahead. Géant is a big warehouse of art goodies. Bus 69 stops exactly in front 👍

When you’re done shopping, cross the street, get back on bus 69 for 3 stops

For my favorite Paris art shop

Much smaller Boesner, with better sales & bigger watercolor selection 👏 Bus 69 drops you right in front here too.

Did I mention I met Solli last week for another look at Mamie Gateaux Brocante? They had maybe the first pressure cooker ever with guide book!

I finally got Mamie Gateaux’s delightful teapot 🫖

To paint…

Meredith Mullins asked me to tell you about Paris Writers Workshop The longest running literary program of its kind in Paris. Past attendees say it’s an inspiring week in the City of Light because it offers a a dynamic community of writers and literary agents—to learn, to write, to network, to energize your literary goals, and just to have fun.

Mark your calendars for June 2nd - June 7th, when Paris weather is perfect for creativity and writing. This year 6 masterclasses will be led by renowned authors, each a specialist in their field. The workshop will be held at Columbia University’s beautiful Reid Hall campus in the heart of literary Paris 5, on the left bank. This historic location offers pleasant rooms for afternoon masterclasses, an auditorium for the evening panel discussions, & a lovely garden for gatherings. Early bird registration is open now! Information and registration available here.

  1. I always like seeing your work desk as messy as it is. It is where you turn out the most beautiful water colors. So glad you bought the tea pot. 🗼❤️🫖

Who says my desk is messy? I am trying to clean it up a bit…but where to put all the stuff on my desk?? 😵‍💫

  2. Your posts are always so whimsical and practical at the same time. Thanks for the tips about the 69 bus routing to the art stores. The first photograph is really great. You caught the bicyclist whizzing up to the art store at just the right moment. At first I thought it might be your arrival there!
The WICE writers' workshop tempts me each year, as the instructors are of such fine caliber. However, the cost of the workshop (about $1,000 for five classes) always makes me wince and reconsider.

I don’t know much about it. Isn’t it for 5 days?

    2. Anonymous10:27 AM

5 full days - morning till evening of activities
      The program schedule:

Bonjour Carol - We absolutely love your St. Régis drawing! And whenever we're in Paris, we go there for steak frites - yum. F.

    1. Anonymous11:47 PM

      Thank you !
I always get the poulet paillard citron 🍋 I will try the steak frites next time.
FYI The Saint Regis owner also owns Cafe Senequier in Saint Tropez

  4. Bonnie L10:23 AM

Beautiful tulips, Carol…and birds! Do you think your affinity for birds is all about their ability to fly south to warmer weather?? If you sprouted wings you’d be heading south with your bikini clutched in your beak! Ahh, heaven!

That writing workshop sounds fabulous! ❤️

    1. Anonymous11:40 PM

      Hmm…good question Bonnie.
I have been collecting & painting birds 🐦 since 2006 at least.
Only YELLOW BIRD made the trip to Paris and he is now somewhat disabled…
The visiting Breakfast pigeons, during Covid, kept me going for sure.
I love ❤️ the 5:30 chorus outside my window 🪟
I have to think about this 🤔

  5. Anonymous10:29 AM

    SOOOO pretty!!!♥♥♥
    Tea Pot is perfect!!

  6. Anonymous11:09 AM

The Writing Workshop is fabulous. I attended in 2016 for the Creative Non-Fiction. Serious teachers, serious students and I could watch my progression during the week. Four years later, that writing turned into a book.. And it's 950 euros until March 15. It is by far the least expensive Writers Workshop in France by far. I've done all the research!!!! I will be there this year for sure!

    1. Anonymous2:33 PM

Thanks for the testimonial. The price seemed reasonable to me too. Congrats on your book 📕 👏 Terrific activities from 9:30 am to 9 pm are offered

  7. Sukicart12:37 PM

That teapot is adorable-perfect for painting. Although I'm not an artist, I love meandering through all of the art shops in Paris.

    1. Anonymous2:27 PM

Art shops are always fun to visit in different cities. So much color. There are more and more things for non-professional.

  8. Anonymous2:25 PM

I so enjoy your emails! Wonderful pictures and information. I will be visiting Paris in May so will look up some of your haunts. R.

  9. Anonymous6:11 PM

Please tell us more about the tea pot and what makes it a special purchase. I do love tea pots.

    1. Anonymous11:30 PM

The teapot is from recently-closed Mamie Gateaux

  10. Hi Carol, can you tell me how you use the little spray bottle in your work? Wish I could paint, even a little. Or write, even a little. Fascinated in your process!

    1. Anonymous11:26 PM

      Sharp eyes 👁️ Cindy
The turquoise spray bottle is to dampen the watercolors
They dry up overnight. I used to but little spray bottles from the art store but they always break - the reason they come in sets of 3-planned obsolescence

  11. If I ever get back to Paris, may I go art store shopping with you? You know all the best places!

    1. Anonymous11:23 PM

      I’d love it Jeanie 😊
      Everyone is leading pastry/chocolate tours
I will lead art shop tours 🎨

  12. Anonymous10:06 PM

    Love the tulips

  13. Anonymous12:32 PM

I love the painting of the table and chairs! So Paris and delightful. Thanks❤️❤️

  14. Yay! You git the teapot.

Love hearing from you
