Salon International de l'Agriculture & Flow

Last day of the Salon. I’m posting this on site. Chickens 🐓 & cows 🐄 are clucking & mooing in the background. It’s a tape to put us in a farmy mood.

I planned to come yesterday…but I went to see the movie 🐈‍⬛ FLOW…instead. More to come.
I started in Halle #1 - Livestock.
“Ah…the smell of it.”
Not exactly what Calvin Klein had in mind.
Almost every region of France has its own particular breed of cattle (and cheeses 🧀, wines 🍷, apples 🍎). Unlike the US, which has exactly 2 cattle breeds (Carolyn told me).
You are advised to admire, but do NOT touch
And do NOT feed!
Drawing ✍️ is allowed.
Meanwhile COW 🐄 education classes, and quizzes with prizes are ongoing for adults & kids.
French kids 👦 grow up knowing where their milk 🥛 cheeses 🧀 butter 🧈 and eggs 🥚 come from.
Animals are an integral part of the process.
There was plenty of cheese 🧀 tasting (and cheese 🧀 buying).
A demo on DIY Beaufort cheese 🧀 making - one of the most delicious (and pricey cheeses) from the Savoie.
A milk bar/bar à lait with free milk
And the creamiest free yogurts (no emulsifiers)
There are free cheese 🧀 tasting sessions.
A map 🗺️ of all the goat 🐐 cheeses in France 🇫🇷
I did get my favorite Coconut Sorbet in Halle 5.2 from Guadeloupe
And a Portuguese Pastel de Nata.
I only flirted with the Loukoum…
These Australian specialties did not win me over.
Is it worth visiting Salon de l’Agriculturenext year?
Absolutement oui! It’s not just families with kiddies 👶
It’s a chance to get back to nature, the earth, even dirt/terroir.
Which brings me to why you should see the beautiful animated film, FLOW, by
Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis
It WON THE It’s up for an Academy award 🏆 tonight!!
There are plenty of animals in this film (70 minutes) yet not one word of spoken dialogue. Animal noises - yes.
And a spectacular soundtrack by the director.
*The less you know about FLOW, the better.
Best to see it in a movie theater for an immersive experience.
*Please wait for the credits to end 🙏

Hmm, I know from observation there are many different varieties of cattle just in VT. So I Googled…there are more than 60 varieties of cattle in the US. Phew! Would hate to run out of milk, ice cream, cheese, etc.

Thank you for returning to the Salon d’Agriculture. It is truly a unique, one of a kind, gigantic, display of France’s prowess in agriculture. Not to be missed. Hope you enjoyed that yogurt.

I can relate…I mis-identified a purse in one of your posts. Whoops! 🫣

I agree with Bonnie. Perhaps your friend was joking.

Yes your friend got it wrong. There always were more than two kinds of dairy cattle. Yes Big agro business is one thing, but for decades we have had a heritage agricultural movement, for example heritage breeds of animals, orchards, charcuterie etc etc. There is a cheese trail in northern New England! Maybe it was beef she was referring to…

I wish VT products came to New York the way they do in Paris in a big farm fair.

Tell Carolyn that there are actually about 80 breeds of cattle in America. I live where dairy cows and beef cattle are a large part of our livelihood in Florida.

There are lots of different breeds of cattle can be found in North America but none of them is native to this continent. All were originally brought (or hybridized) here from other places, mostly from Europe.

Hi Carol, I live in Australia and love all your posts as they bring memories of my trips to France. I love your drawings- especially the 🐈‍⬛. I’m not impressed with the Aussie menu either and I have never seen kangaroo on a take-away menu here - ever!
