A very kind PBer invited me yesterday to a night at the opera ๐
Have you been to Theatre Champs-Elysรฉes? Built in 1913 by G. Perret, van de Velde, and A.Perret.
I went in 2018 to see the Nut Cracker Suite with Bonnie, Rob & Bear ๐ป
Anything goes as long as it’s toute en noir/all-black. Plus the obligatory red ๐งฃ Fortunately I wore exactly that. Merci Dieu๐
Unfortunately Uranus, the bull & his Ingres-like Valentine ❤️ date were sitting in front of us ๐ oblivious that 4 other people were behind them hoping for a glimpse at the stage.
Did I mention we were seeing the divine Baroque opera (in modern dress) by G.F. Handel, Semele for 3 hours. My opera date warned me of violence ๐ช in the 3rd act. Good news is, being semi-narcoleptic in dark places, I snoozed ๐ด through all the bloody bits ๐คธ♂️
You can hear the complete opera with Cecilia Bartoli on Youtube.
At 10:30 PM we headed out for dinner at the appropriately Art Deco restaurant, Le Relais Plaza down the street.
But the caramel au beurre salรฉ (รฎle Flottant for 2) certainly was ๐
Fortunately a nice taxi ๐ came along & saved ๐ me ๐
(Normally in Paris a taxi ๐ won’t stop for you unless you’re at a TAXI STAND☝️)
๐ THANK YOU kind PBer for a very grand evening ๐
I hope you enjoyed it too ☺️
So glad there’s a post on your latest adventure…
ReplyDeleteHappy Valentines Day ❤️ B
With the exception of the giant who sat in front of you (the bane of my existence at 4’9”!), the opera sounds like an amazing Paris experience. I will add it to my list of things to do the next time I am there. I also ๐the twilight photo at the end of the post! I would print and hang that one of I had taken it!๐
ReplyDeleteYou must Stacia. Even a tour of Opera Garnier is pretty Fab.

What a delight to read about your trip to the opera, with seats in the box! Did you flirt with someone, looking over your fan? Margie
ReplyDeleteNice fantasy Margie ☺️
DeleteI sat in the box next to yours in the mid 1960’s when Charlie Chaplin’s daughter, Geraldine Chaplin made her Paris debut with the Royal London Ballet in the ballet “Cinderella”. My sister and I attended with our parents. Everyone was wearing black then too.
ReplyDeleteWe were the only children in attendance that evening. Thank you for the photos.
Oh fun memories !
DeleteSounds good even if not able to see.
ReplyDeleteI was there Monday night.
What is a PBer??

Sometimes, no matter what production is on stage, the best part of a night at the theatre is spent people watching! In recent times Ive been disappointed to see a trend to more casual attire. I want to spread the word: glamour, go for glamour!!
ReplyDeleteAh yes…some dress quite casually. US running shoes ๐ are to blame imo
DeleteSounds like you had a great night…it’s good to break out of our routines now and again. You have a great group of Paris Breakfast followers.
ReplyDeleteTheatre des Champs-Elysรฉes is fabulous in every way except for sight lines! Twice we’ve had orchestra seats, which were great, but then we had ‘nose bleed’ seats which had absolutely no room for our legs. Yikes!
Your dinner looked yummy. Glad you had a night out. Happy Valentines. ๐
Thank you for sharing. Here in San Francisco, many of the people in my age group (I'm 77) wear sneakers, jeans and fleece to the opera and ballet. Thank goodness some, as I, dress in velvet, lace, and sparkles. The young women wear beautiful dresses and high heels--on opening nights they are often in gowns. The young men wear suits or expensive tailored shirts with very nice leather shoes. I guess many in my age group are still loving Haight Ashbury and Woodstock
ReplyDeleteLovely to hear Lynne
