Yesterday, Rain, the bus, Picasso - Paul Smith, Redon

Yesterday it rained like hell all night

And most of the morning. We had tons of rain all week. It’s raining right now…If it was the Olympics…uh oh 😱

Yesterday I was determined to get to the pool 🏊 For once I left on time. Bus 67 was coming! I ran across/traversé the street, waving my Navigo card heading to the bus stop. But bus 67 did not stop 🛑 & instead headed into traffic😖 This is unusual. Most Paris bus drivers are terrifically nice 👍 There was tons of traffic so I kept running 🏃‍♂️ (Fortunately I ate a hamburger for breakfast). I caught up with the bus and made rude gestures…like how come you didn’t stop? The driver saw me & shrugged 🤷‍♀️ Somehow I managed to cross 3 streets and get to the next bus stop just as the bus was closing its doors. I banged on the door & he let me onboard. I did not say ‘bonjour’. One of the passengers said to me, it wasn’t very nice he didn’t stop’. Obviously everyone saw the mini drama 😂

Of course when I got to the pool on time - a rarity, IT WAS CLOSED ‘because of an incident’ (which usually means the workers want a day off). If I’d checked the schedule I would have seen it said FERMÉ ☹️ What to do?

In Tansy’s Little Book of Thumbnails class one of our assignments was to do tiny sketches of book jackets 📕 (I am not supposed to show you this…shh).

I didn’t do the assignment but I noticed the Paul Smith stripy, colorful book jacket.

Paul Smith is king 👑 of stripes. I’m pretty crazy for anything striped

I thought better get to the Picasso exhibit Paul Smith just curated before it closes August 29 - a 10-minute walk from Saint-Meri pool 👍

I wasn’t disappointed.

What an interesting way to view Picasso.

Sir Paul even used Picasso’s famous striped Breton marinière shirt (Picasso was crazy for stripes).

To decorate a room. *You can buy Picasso’s blue & white marinière striped shirt in the museum gift shop.

I liked the blood red room full of Picasso’s black ink silhouette drawings of the bullfight/Corrida.

In the basement, near the vestiaire, is a children’s drawing room with some darn good kid ‘Picassos’ on the walls.
Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up”, Picasso said.

Picasso’s Paris hôtel particular is quite the mansion.

I’m sure Sir Paul would have loved ❤️ these attendees

Thank you for your fabulous responses to ‘ Do You Love ❤️ French  Butter’!! I’m hard at work picking & choosing which French products to include in the Paris Letter.

I got a bit sidetracked yesterday painting seashells 🐚 (bulots /whelks (which no one mentioned they wanted to bring back).

Inspired by Redon’s fabulous seashell pastel. It hung over his fireplace. A friend brought him the conch from the Seychelles islands. The picture is much bigger than you’d expect.

Mine are much smaller 6” x 8”

After Redon… on Etsy now..
Please share with a friend & visit my shop for Paris gifts 🎁
☔️ Bon Thursday BPers ☔️

  2. One thing leads to another! From missing the bus (how awful, you are in great shape to chase it) to Picasso. I am a fan of stripes, not so much Picasso. After many years I am heading to the Art Institute of Chicago so I think I will see The Old Guitarist and of course there is his monumental sculpture in Daley Plaza. You are so fortunate to be surrounded by incredible museums and art.🗼❤️

  4. I like Paul's stripes on the wall-- it looks great with the art. So sorry you had such an ordeal getting the bus (that was rude) and then to find the pool closed! NO! But looks like you made the most of the day! Hope you are much dryer now!

Oh my, you are getting our VT weather! ☔️ How fortunate you are to always have an alternative plan when life throws you are curveball! Those darned “fermeture exceptionnelle”…not so exceptional it seems.

French foods are a big part of our attraction to France. Petit Écolièr cookies can be found in most any supermarket in the US. Fermière yogurts, too…however they are made here in the US and not nearly as good as the French equivalent.

    Love your seashell watercolors. ❤️

  6. And I thought "an incident" usually meant that someone pooped in the pool! Probably best that you wound up at the Musée Picasso instead.

Well you took what started out as a very frustrating day and turned it around and made it a great day! I applaud you Carol! The Picasso exhibit looks fabulous. You always take such wonderful photos and it makes us all feel like we are there. Interesting about Paul Smith (I like stripes too) and I love your watercolors of the seashell. Wishing you sunshine and not so much rain. -Suzanne P.

Thank you Carol! I have 'struggled' with Picasso for years who seems to have used women and then discarded them and on to the next in between being brilliant through many phases of his art. However I did see a painting of his in San Francisco which seemed to express hunger in Paris during World War 2 and when I asked the doyenne she said yes! so then I felt a breakthrough in my own way of trying to understand him. Sometimes my 6 year old granddaughter does a great picture in crayon that I relate better to.

That was the purpose of the exhibition - to change how people perceive Picasso today. It’s generational in many ways. When I was in art school women artist were too often secondary to the men.
Being helper, model, muse was an honored position ☹️

I love how you turn mini-disasters into positive experiences. I LOVE stripes. Went to the Picasso museum shortly after it reopened and am going back this fall although I'm not a big fan of his work.

      Thanks Suki ☺️
There is no doubt to me Picasso was a master draftsman. He could draw classically like Ingres.
His whimsical sculptures - the bronze goat made from a bike saddle.
The museum has a collection of wonderful toys he made for his children out of scraps of junk basically.
A wildly inventive genius in my opinion. Unpredictable, often unforgiving and relentlessly cruel to those close to him. Beyond comprehension.

Love your posts. Just FYI - stripped, with 2 P, means naked like a stripper. Striped, with 1 P, is the word you want for the french tshirt.

Your recount of a Paris rainy day & the bus adventure had me hooked! Your determination to get to the pool and the Picasso exhibit was inspiring. The way Paul Smith curated Picasso's work sounds amazing, especially the red room.
Picasso’s quote about remaining an artist even as we grow up is so true.
Thanks for sharing your day & artistic insights! Looking forward to more 👍 HeavenlyCoupons
