Hippodrome Paris Longchamp | France Galop

My watercolor of the backs of race horses and jockeys.
Have you been to the races 🐎/la course in Paris?

Walking up the stairs to Longchamp stadium

Last Sunday I went 🐎 Whoa !

Horse statue at the entrance of Longchamp
Hippodrome Longchamp is easy to get to.

More drawings of horses and jockeys
Take Line1 to Pont de Neuilly. Cross the street.

Take bus 43. It drops you in front. Et voila 👏

The grounds around the Hippodrome Longchamp.
Entre is 5€.Kids under 12 are free. Sunday is L’HIPPODROME EN FAMILLE’/family day.

People watching the races from the stadium.
It was a gorgeous sunny 😎 day. You can picnic on the grass.

Owner and trainer exercising the horses pre-race in the VIP corral.
I headed to the corral to get up close and personal with the horses 🐎

Close up of an owner walking his horse pre-race.
This is where they exercise them 🐎

Back view of a jockey on a horse walking.
Before
My ink sketches of an owner walking his horse.
And after the races. There were 8 races on Sunday. I didn’t get this and left early - big mistake.
Another owner walking his horse.
I’m guessing this Wall Street type was the owner and the trainer walking the horse.
The Brasserie cafe inside the VIP area.
In the VIP area there’s a brasserie
Drinks you can buy from a stand inside the VIP area.
You can also get Champagne 🍾 or beer etc. from a stand.
Watching the horse races on a big screen inside the VIP area
Many do not leave the enclosure. They watch the entire race from a big screen.
People crowded around the betting machines
Nearby you place your bets while keeping an eye 👁️ on the race.
One woman watching the screen over the betting machines
I just browsed…but I picked up a betting stub left in the machine for 160€!
A woman equestrian rider prances before the race begins.
I went out to get up close to the fence.
A woman equestrian rider prances by before the race begins.
The horses are out of the gat and racing.
AND THEY🐎🐎🐎ARE OFF & RUNNING!!
A green map of he race track.
The race course is quite big, so you miss parts of the race
A watercolor of one horse racing on the grass.
Unless you’re watching a screen.
After the race, the horses are quite skittish…too excited to walk calmly.
Jockeys and owners chat after the race in the corral.
The winners come out for photos
The racing sheets you pickup at the entry.
I had no idea how to read the racing sheets they give you at the entry, but now I do thanks to a very kind PBer.
Two Jockeys walk in the corral
The jockeys wear the colors or ‘silks’ of the horse owners.
Are you a racing 🐎 fan?
The green grass corral after the race.
It really is tremendous fun for 5€ (reserved seats were 15€) on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Paris. WATCH to get an idea. True confessions: I ate a waffle, a croque Monsieur and a chocolate ice cream🍦
I hope next time to sketch ✍️ onsite.

Oh Carol, you should be the official illustrator of the Royal Ascot!!! Imagine how wonderful that would be! Once you finish, drawing all the horses, you could move onto the HATS!!! Love you from 🇨🇦

  5. Carol - I loved the Louvre map and the page of Elaine Sciolino's book. I'm reading her book slowly as it has soooo many details! Happy Spring!

Where have you been Longchamp all my Paris life?
I guess folks spend €€€€ their dough on the betting.

  8. Lovely paintings Carol, looks like a nice sunny day at the races. The horses are beautiful!
My dad is into horse racing so I grew up going with him sometimes, my sister and I watch the horses in their stables too (not sure you can do that here), as well as in the ring and on the race track. That is very French racing food, we were always after chips and ice creams.

Your paintings are like Dick Francis novels springing to life in color. Love how the horse are ready to race out of the page onto the course.

I’ve only has a Croque Monsieur here in the US & love them. Did you happen to take a photo of yours because I’d like to see what a Parisian one looks like plus add what kind of bread is usually used. They’re yummy!

It was not a prime example Bobbye. It is usually on thick white bread, no crusts, overloaded with messy, melted cheese. This was just a snack, a minimal version so I did not take a pic 📸
