On the flight over to France I saw A Good Year, an adorable film that takes place in Provence. Marion Cotillard plays the female lead, sought after by Russell Crowe. I'd planned to see La Vie en Rose in Paris, not knowing Cotillard also plays Edith Piaf..
My cousin K. (really my second cousin) lives in Pigalle and I knew she'd want to see the Edith Piaf movie. K. always dresses in blue, always wears a blue beret like a true Frenchie... She's tiny and a bit of a "piaf" (slang for sparrow) herself.
My cousin has a Tea Cup Yorkie...another little piaf / sparrow called Punchy.
We did get to see La Vie En Rose together (it was called La Mome in Paris, slang for "the kid"). It was in French with no subtitles.
Still at the end, I cried buckets and my cousin sang the La Vie en Rose song...
On the flight home I got to see La Vie en Rose with subtitles and watched it 3 more times. My cousin was born in Poland. Her motto is, Carpe Diem.
What a special treat, to see such a movie with someone so dear, who actually saw and heard La Piaf perform!
ReplyDeleteYour photos are very beautiful, my favorite's the one with your cousin in blue, and the hand crocheted cafe curtain.
I gather you must shoot at least 2 pictures a minute while in Paris, you have already shown us a veritable cornucopia, and I am sure you have got many many more up your sleeve. Thank you!
Wow, Your cousin is no dull piaf! She totally endeared me to her in the last photos.. She mixed my favorite Pink with her favorite blue. Love it. ;-)
ReplyDeleteMust see this new movie you keep talking about. We saw and now own A GOOD LIFE. Loved the scenery. Enjoyed todays blog.

I love today's post. The photographs are wonderful. Your cousin K. and her Yorkie, Punchy are delightful. I love the way K. dresses. She looks like a charming woman and so lovely in her signature blue.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know the film "A Good Year" took place in Provence. I must rent it soon and view it. As for "La Vie En Rose", as a fan of Edith Piaf, I will be sure to see it.
I love the the photographs in today's post.
I liked La Môme too.
ReplyDeleteI went to the Cinema with two friends of mine and when the film ended at both sides I found them crying a river...
Fortunetly I always have a Kleenex packet near because both had forgotten theirs at home
(that´s the problem of that tiny clutches).

I agree with you...
ReplyDeleteIt´s incredible that Piaf is played by the same actress from A GOOD YEAR (I liked this film too, even if it is not in the usual Ridley Scott style...
Love you Sugar Plum!
ReplyDeleteI love all that you share.........
I love great movies!
Big hugs
Vive K.!
ReplyDeleteCarol,
ReplyDeleteThis is such a beautiful post. Your cousin is amazing. Her character and Frenchness comes through in the photos. Thank you so much for sharing these with us!

She looks like a real sweetie--she has a certain elan about her...she exudes personality. Nice to "meet" her and Punchy.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet little dog.
ReplyDeleteI think I remember the photo of our cousin when you posted about "blue" in Paris. I remember that stunning blue scarf. So elegant.
"A Good Year" was a fun movie. My husband and I saw it twice even though I think he was just humoring me, he said he liked it. There was a comical little dog in that movie!
I so enjoy your photos, your art and your posts.
Thank you so much for taking me on a little vacation each day as I eat lunch at my desk and look at your wonderful blog.
She looks like an angel.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful !
ReplyDeleteWhat a great person to have known.
Annie
Thanks! This is just wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI love that little Yorkie!
Your cousin has such an earnest face; it would be lovely to meet her one day (in France, of course!).
I will try to rent La Vie En Rose (with subtitles).
I love Edith Piaf's singing!
Wow!
Votre Cousine est tres belle. Long may she wave! Et tu, aussi.

Thank you for your warm response to my cousin.
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to share her with you for a while..
Ah, these matriarchs of Paris! No need to guess whose foot was shod in bronze leather and whose was in a sneaker.
ReplyDeleteWith scarf and brooch and fabulous lipstick no less.
Bless her.
PS - Nothing can kill the old ladies of Poland. Nothing.

ReplyDeleteThe gold ballerina is mine and the white sneaker is my cousin's, not that they deter from her Frenchiness at all :)
I adore your cousin K and her little dog , she is one snazzy old lady.
ReplyDeleteI loved seeing all those older ladies with their dogs and their fabulous attitude walking around Paris - oh how I wish I took photos of them.
I must see those movies now! Got me going girl! LOL
K is adorable and so is her little pooch! I love her beret! I can't wait to see the film. I hope it is coming to NY soon.....
ReplyDeleteWhat a stunning, stunning post!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSo precious....
What an enchanting lady!!
ReplyDeleteShe looks terrific in her signature blue beret.
What a delightful post today and to meet your cousin~totally French!
ReplyDeleteYour cousin sounds WONderful... wish I could go see La Mome with her as well... and sing La Vie en Rose... it always brings tears to my eyes, regardless...
ReplyDeleteBizous...
Adriane :)
P.S. Your watercolors are beautiful BTW...
Love your blog. I also have always loved the great Piaf.
ReplyDeleteI will look for the movie you mentioned.
I was looking for La vie en rose subtitles (in French or English) and that`s how I entered your blog :) Do you have the original DVD, or did you download the subtitles? If so, could you please give me a link? I look forword to hearing from you... Thanks!
ReplyDeleteMONICA simply GOOGLE La vie en rose lyrics and the Louie Armstrong version will come up!
ReplyDeleteI live two short blocks from Grom, but every time I decide to try it, the line is prohibitively long. You shouldn't have to wait like that for something that's practically next door. But I probably would wait in line for Berthillon or Amorino.
ReplyDeleteLOVED your "Tante" K ! She is so Parisian and full of character even though she is from Poland she embraces that French style so effortlessly ! Please tell her she is just lovely and we want more of her too !
ReplyDeleteYes, in some ways she's more French than the French. She's a Survivor and come here as a young woman. Her husband was too...
