Cheveux Cheris - Musee Branly

Mardi 28 janvier Cheveur Cherie/Beloved Hair musee Branly

A facinating range of objet, photos, paintings, artifacts showing/using hair in ways unimaginable. Plus reflecting trends of the times both Western and worldwide.

Some of the hairdos of various times will knock your socks off.
Remember bouffants and the serf?
Did you iron your hair?

The Branly mentions:
'The strict, orderly appearance of buns, plaits and braids may represent a desire to conform to social norms...'
Yet French author Colette lounging in a hamock could not look more relaxed?
Yet the infamous shaving off of all hair as a public sign of shame in this famous end-of World WarII photo of Robert Capa's could not be more intense. These women referred to as the 'toneurs'(sp) and punished for having slept with the enemy.

Amazing capes made from hair residue found in brushes. Hard to believe. I looked at my hair in the brush last night and wondered.

An astonishing Chinese headress made of tiny braids woven together.

Tell me the name of this star with the fab hair. I've forgotten.

Did you know Picasso refused to cut his hair until France was liberated at the end of the war?

Evidently full length hairy capes are not so unusual no matter what culture.
One of the Branly titles mentioned the signifigance of hair color: 'Western civilizations historically recognize seven major groups of hair colour - black, brown, auburn, chestnut, red, blond, grey and white - and each hair colour comes with its own stereotypes.'
As Veronique and I left the Branly this unleashed dog ran after a small spaniel. We heard its owner call out,
"Blackie, come back!"
Bonne/Bon Week-End!

What French Women Know

Sometimes publishers send me books about the French woman...Yesterday I took a second look at What French Women Know...thinking it would be another book telling unsavvy Americains how to tie our scarves and eat leek soup daily - mais non!I was completely engaged. Granted the French woman does think differently. Very differently.French women start thinking differently in kindergarden - books on philosophy for kids at the Paris Salon de Livre. I was amazed.French women look different from us and they get the training early... Why can they pull off messy hair better than anybody else? Because a hairdresser creates this, not sleeping in. They put on our jeans and look so darn chic! Parisianne Anne says I mustn't say chic, but rather 'c'est classe'. Chic is passe...French women put on OUR Converse (baskets) and look so much better! Heck
Being de classe isn't an age thing.
For the French woman
Debra Oliver's book is not so caught up in these superficial, surfacy details, but it's thought provoking. It just came out, so au courant.
There is one thing we women agree upon, French and Americain.
We ALL LOVE MACARONS!
What do you think about French women? Are you in awe?
BONJOUR FRENCH WOMEN! We salute you!

Paris Haircuts

I
Why am I compulsively taking photos of these giant Paris haircut posters...They're quite compelling wouldn't you say?Especially with the reflections of Parisian apartments plastered on top... You rarely see anyone walking around with these extreme haircuts but who cares? This set of bequiling posters are from Toni & Guy Bastille -Hey they're British and have gone global! You can attend their academy too if you so desire... More haircut posters... Did the French invent messy hair - they make it look so good. Here's the story of my French haircut if you're interested... I got the shaken finger for taking this shot! Why? I saw the same poster in New York. Go figure... Ah...a haircut poster for grownups - ELEGANT non? OK, I'll go for this haircut poster of sorts, at the Marie-Antoinette exhibit..lots of hair and lots of bows. You could even fit a croissant and a macaron or two in there...
BONJOUR PARIS!
