What to eat during a Canicule in Paris

“So so glad you're back in my life!!!  What a HAPPY difference you make!!!!!”Thank you!!! 🍒Just a quickie post to say Welcome back❤️THANK YOU PBers for returning to the blog❤️ So, so happy to see many of you, lost in the previous email changeover ❤️

We are supposed to hit 97 today.

I ran out last nite to stock up on ice cubes/glaçons (made of fizzy water!) How quaint. Picard was almost sold out. And other cold things to eat.

The cafe terrasses were full of students downing beer.
Parisians are still wearing black in the heatwave

What French AC looks like! Ha ha

In Summer I live on ‘originale’ Alvalle Gazpacho. They were sold out so I got the tomato-mint-basil combo. Add a few cubes, a squeeze of lime and You have an Apéro of sorts. This stuff is an instant transfusion.

I know you think I live on non-stop pastries, In fact I try to balance it with a healthy regime. These packets of lentile and quinoa are a great addition to Summer salads.

I eat daily quite a few fermented foods like chou and kefir.
Things I did not buy — any ice cream in Picard…
or any chocolate bars 😳 but still fun to browse
My healthy haul at the Intermarché checkout.
This morning I closed the shutters and windows to lock in the cool 67 degree air.
Fortunately the entryway of my very old stone building is cooool. If only we could sleep Zzzzz here. Stay Cool dear PBers and wear your wet T-shirts 👕
🍒I hope you enjoyed seeing life in Paris in the Canicule🍒

It's lovely to hear from you once again! After enduring an 8-day canicule here in formerly-temperate Portland (and a house that never needed air conditioning), with 96-102 ̊ highs, very warm nights and high humidity at all hours, I empathize with what you have endured and are enduring. Is there a pool nearby in which you can cool down? Lacking that, what Bob the Long-Haired Dachshund and I do when the heat+humidity become overwhelming is hop in the shower and pour buckets of cold water (with ice if necessary) over ourselves. Wishing you and Bear the best!

Happy to have you back at PB Leslie! Yes I will go to the piscine 🏊‍♀️ this morning. The best way to beat the heat is take an old, thin T-shirt 👕 Wet it in cold water and put on. You will scream a bit at the shock, but it cools your core and your body will make the water evaporate. Then re-wet. This works better than any cold shower!!

I was traveling in France in 2017 in 98F temp days. Our hotel staff at our very hot hotel told us to wet a towel and drape it over us at bedtime in order to sleep. They said this tip was given to them by visiting Texans who were used to extreme temps. It worked wonderfully.

Hi Leslie! It was something wasn't it? Wishing the forecast wasn't creeping up again this weekend....so far, not much of a cool down, IMO. I will need to try the wet t-shirt trick this time :)

Very good suggestions facing another canicule heat. Add to this stayinf indoors. Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun as Noel Coward notes in his famous song.

67 degrees you lucky duck! It’s 76 degrees this morning at 4:35 am🥵 in Florida. Mid 90’s every day with a feels like 100’s with the humidity. Hottest summer I’ve experienced.

I second your recommendation about Alvalle gazpacho - the best! I am in the south of France and it is HOT here as well. I buy my chocolate bars early in the day and rush them home in a cooler bag to put in the fridge! Your views on life in Paris keep me well entertained.

  17. Your weather is the same as ours. Very hot. Funny about the French ac. Looks at all of those lovely chocolate bars, how fortunate you are to have them. Interesting groceries, so different than the U.S. stay cool. Smart to close the shutters and lock in the cool air. I am so glad your peeps are liking your MailChimp newsletters.

Our heatwave in BC Canada just ended and it’s lovely. I’m sitting on my patio at 7am wearing my sweats in 13 degrees Celsius. I can see the steam rising from my morning cup of tea.

  21. So happy to see you back. My husband and I have been missing the Paris Breakfasts so much. We thought we had lost you forever.
We have been having heat here in Toronto but not as bad you Europe or our own BC. Stay cool.

Suzanne P here. It is so wonderful to be getting your Paris Breakfast newsletters again. Missed them. As Leslie from Oregon mentioned we are having a long heat wave here in Portland. Days in the high 90s and some 100 days. Wearing a wet t-shirt and using a wet towel at night are all great ideas that have been told to me as well for those that do not have AC. We get excited if it goes down into the 80s here but the forecast is for a lot of 90 degree plus days for August. Looks like you got a very healthy grocery store haul Carol. Always love seeing the entryway to your building. So inviting and cool. Take care!

Welcome back Suzanne and all others❤️ I have missed you a bunch. I wearing the wet T-shirt 👕 right now. It does work wonders. Please try it. Also a wet, cold kerchief at the neck. Also ice cream 🍦 cones are very cooling - I tried 2 of those today in succession 😊🤸‍♂️

Ah yes, the wet, cold kerchief/bandanna at the neck saved me many times on long, hot or warm hikes! Thank you for that reminder.

Austin has been in triple digits since May this year and on target to be our hottest summer ever. Grateful for AC! I've been in Paris during a heat wave. Take care!

  24. I'm very happy to see you back in my in box! I've missed your uplifting photos and messages and am so happy that your move to France is working out for you. We have moved away from Boston, MA where we met you at the French Consulate (?) (Alliance?) where you were having a lovely exhibition of your artwork. We've followed you ever since then and are thrilled with your success. Stay well!

Hello, thanks for the wonderful blog! I read your blog through Feedly and since July 26, 2022, I noticed that your posts are truncated. I only see the first two photos on the post -- I think it is due to your setting of "Read More" where you have to click on it to access the rest of the post. Would it be possible to revert the setup to its original state?

  26. First, I love the new format - very clean and sharp. I also love the Fr. air conditioning - I can't imagine how awful that heat must be. I would love to be able to buy that gazpacho as it's one of my favorite summer meals. I recently made some from some gifted home- grown tomatoes and froze some in blocks.

I used to be semi-vegetarian. Then I moved to Paris and moved on to the finer things of life. I try to balance all the deserts with fermented and other healthy foods but I’m afraid the scale tips steeply towards ice cream. There is so much of it here and very good too.
