Another October weekend ๐ in Normandie
Shannon and her sister, Kathy kindly invited me
To explore apple ๐ country with her.
And boy did we ever in Vimoutiers,
A small village you’ve never heard of
It’s not even on the map ๐บ️ Not that it matters. We are in the APPLE ๐ CAPITOL
We looked at the apple mills and what have you.
They had red-striped Normande cider cups called bolรฉe Which I once painted. Traditionally they have no saucers. I took poetic license. We ate apples we picked up off the ground. They were delish! I ate a tarte with slices of baked apple ๐ A classic pastry of the Le Pays d’Auge. In the town hall a giant Moulin Rouge made of apples ๐ Plus a tableaux of apple CanCan dancers ๐ We cut whole heads in 1/2, roasted in tin foil and spread on top of roasted squash and carrots ๐ฅ plus pecans! Accompanying with local cidre of course. ๐ A lovely time in Normandie ๐

Thanks for the wonderful apple adventure! Now I must make an apple tart!
ReplyDeleteI have been looking for CRUNCHY APPLES ๐ fora long time. I’m going to eat them plain. By the time they get to Paris they are not so crunchy. Miss New York apples ❤️
DeleteThat looked like so much fun - and full of bubbles! Love that you were in a place that wasn't on the map and painting bolรฉes de cidre. I love those traditional cups and your painting just captures it beautifully, Carol.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jill ❤️ Those saucer-less cups have always fascinated me!
DeleteWhat a delightful post Carol. I love fresh apples and cider. Plan to make an apple crisp today from apples I purchased this week at a local apple orchard. The roasted squash with carrots and fresh garlic makes looks so delicious. -Suzanne P.
ReplyDeleteWe ROASTED while heads of garlic too so it was like creamy butter to spread on the veg ๐
DeleteFunny, I was at the market this morning wondering what to serve with dinner tonight, saw all the lovely apples and am now turning them into home made apple sauce. Then after peeling the apples and getting them going, I read your post.
ReplyDeleteKarmic destiny! One thing you can’t find here with the abondance of apples ๐ is apple butter…nor dried apple rings. Bonjour tristesse ๐ฟ
DeleteDรฉlicieux. Les pommes sont magnifique ร la region.. Merci, Carole pour l'amour ร France. Bonne week-end, Isabelle
ReplyDeleteGrand Merci Isabelle ❤️ ๐
DeleteAnother weekend, another food fete! Glad you got your apple fix! Love french cider…SO good! ❤️๐
ReplyDeleteIt was good ๐ But I dropped my glass bottle in the train station…bye bye Apple cider
DeleteThis summer, while in Courseulles sur Mer, I had cidre again for the first time since living in Normandy 50 years ago - I mean Normandy cidre. :) The taste was so remarkable and brought back wonderful memories of my days there. So, thank you for your drawings and photos of the festival in Vimoutiers. GwenEllyn
ReplyDeleteThat’s it! The taste of apple ๐ juice and cider here is remarkable. I don’t remember it tasting like that in Pennsylvania…
DeleteVery interesting- love your water color (of course) and the apple Moulin Rouge. I wonder if there is a single weekend without a food fete in France. My bet is no.
ReplyDeleteI wonder the same thing Suki.
DeleteI would like a ticket ๐️ to ride from SNCF ๐ to all the food fรชtes in France ๐ซ๐ท Why not? ๐ฅฐ
Of course you need a saucer… your cup overfloweth you lucky girl!!! Looks like a wonderful weekend and Shannon looks gorgeous in that Beautiful coat!๐
ReplyDeleteFall ๐ colors suit Shannon to a T.
DeleteLove your travel blogs, Carole - and yes, it is Apple season here, too. I like to buy “seconds” at local farmers market and turn them into applesauce (with skins) for winter breakfast deliciousness with buckwheat pancakes! Used to make apple butter! Agnes
ReplyDeleteAPPLE BUTTER…❤️ ❤️ ❤️ France ๐ซ๐ท needs you toute suite Agnes
DeleteThe baked apple tarte looks incredible!
ReplyDeleteI only ate the topping…saving some space for other goodies. So good ๐
DeleteThose apples probably taste better than anything here. Even the organics which is hard to find soils that haven’t been mixed with pesticides from other soils that fly in dust storms etc.Lynne
ReplyDeleteThe soil in Normandie is rich with clay.
DeleteI love the rose garlic. I will go through all the bulbs to see if I can find any here.
ReplyDeleteIt’s supposed to be a slightly milder & more versatile then the Violette garlic, which is supposed to be much stronger…qui sait?

Wow! That really is apple central! They can even build a windmill out of them! Apples are great, fresh, cooked as cider. I didn’t know about the special cider cups though.
ReplyDeleteWhen you got for moule et Frits, you usually drink cider with it in those cups. At Crรชperies too they have them. Cute!
