Sonia Delaunay - Galerie Zlotowski, Galerie Roger Viollet

Wednesday we went to a pre-preview

Double show of Sonia Delaunay At Galerie Zlotowski & Galerie Roger Viollet.

I first fell in love with Sonia at the 2014 retrospective at musee des Arts Moderne.
It’s perfect timing for a new exhibit just after Paris Fashion Week
To experience the stunning influence of Delaunay on the art & fashion world of her time..
Born in Odessa, Ukraine (1885 - 1979) at 5 Sonia was adopted by her wealthy uncle and moved to Saint Petersburg. She started painting at 14 and at 20 moved to Paris.
After a marriage of convenience to a gallerist (who exhibited her work)
She met her husband painter 🎨 Robert Delaunay.
Together they created ‘Simultaneism’,
Noted for its strong, primary colors & abstract, geometric shapes.
It began with an abstract, patchwork baby quilt 🧵 Sonia made for their son, Charles (1911).
Everyone wanted her ‘look’
She saw clothing as ‘performative artworks’.
My attempt to emulate SD…
Pretty soon she was designing interiors; rugs, wallpaper, textiles.
Designing cars 🚗
Designing costumes for
Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballet Russe.
Delaunay was friends with costume designer, Leon Bakst.
Sonia lived to be 94, painting till the end. For a much better explanation of her life’s work listen to  this Youtube Cooper Hewitt lecture 📖
The Seine obliged with geometric colors to end the galerie evening

Yes, many do not know Sonia Delaunay. They do know her husband’s Eiffel Tower murals, who she promoted assiduously after his death.

Sonia Delaunay was an exceptional artist and worth exploring. Her husband, Robert is more well known, thanks to her efforts after he past in 1941.

Love Sonia since long. Her paintings are second to none. Thanks for this post,Carole. For women in the first decades of 20th century, life and family wasn't easy, let alone, painting, sculpting and the like.
