Painting in Rouen with Monet:

Somehow I forgot to tell you about

Painting in Rouen last weekend.
The annual Urban Sketchers France 🇫🇷 picked Rouen this year,

And who can complain.

This Frenchman was Not from New Zealand 🇳🇿 but had a charming, tiny watercolor setup with a magnetic paintbox by art-toolkit.com.

Rouen, with all it’s pedestrian 👣 walkways is perfect place

For sketchers. I took note of some nice folding chairs 🪑 on display with comfortable backs,

My little folding stool was not very comfy…

Since it was broiling hot 🥵 out,

I took refuge in my pleasantly air-conditioned hotel Adagio room,

With accompanying Handel’s Water 💧Music 🎵

CATHEDRALE MAC CLOU, ROUEN
Absolutely verboten 👎 by the rules and bylaws of the Urban Sketchers.

You must paint ✍️ outdoors

Cathedral in Rouen, Watercolor 6" x 8"
Directly in front of the object of your obsession,

CATHEDRAL IN ROUEN, 6”x8”

No matter the
temperature or conditions 🌞

BY J.M.W. TURNER,1832
Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds’. etc.

Cathedral in Rouen,6”x8”

My loose copy of JWM Turner’s watercolor to warmup to painting churches. Cathédrales are not my usual cup of tea ☕️…

But it is Claude Monet, who perhaps put ROUEN on the map. The OIL PAINT is thickly encrusted, creating a textural effect. Monet complained how difficult it was to capture the same light ☀️ everyday between 7am to 5pm.

Although Jeanne d’Arc was burnt at the stake in Rouen in 30, May, 1431.

Monet famously painted 30 versions of cathedrale de Notre Dame,

The first of his series of painting subjects.

A BOOKLET FROM THE MUSÉE DES BEAUX-ARTS
He came to Rouen on 4 different occasions, setting up a studio inside a lingerie shop (!) directly across from the Cathedral.

Some are in the musée d’Orsay in Paris and some in the musée des Beaux Arts of Rouen.

An attractive Rouenaise in a cool long, red skirt…

I had every intention of seeing Rouen’s Monets, but the heat got to me.
A pistachio ice cream cone🍦won the day. Choices, choices…

Here’s central ROUEN so you can get the lay of the land. Our hotel Adagio X was by the Seine on the outer edge of town.

Le Vieux Marché, far left on the map

Is where we had our fabulous lunch at La Couronne.

Coming home, we got 1st class seats 🚊 with AC 🥶 🙏 so worth it.
Paris seemed much cooler by the Seine…
❤️

I can draw ✍️ on sight but painting an unfamiliar subject like cathedrals, I need the comfort of a studio space.

On location in the heat's not for me, either. The view from your hotel windows should be OK...or the ice cream shop!

I had a view of the Seine…not much of Rouen.
I painted from my photos 🖼️

‘Broiling’? Yikes, I would have been right with ya in the air conditioning! Smart sketchers finding shady spots. Love to see them sketching.

Your watercolors are gorgeous, looks like you’ve been painting cathedrals forever! Eat your heart out, Monet!

This was my first jump into the deep end of painting cathedrals. It helped to have Handel’s Water 💧 Music 🎵 playing in the background.

The awful heat seems to be everywhere this Summer as my relatives in Albi are noting it above 85+ degrees..every Summer hotter these days. Lovely sketching!

Thank you. I had planned to visit ALBI at the TOULOUSE Urban Sketchers event in July, but now I think it will be too hot 🥵 for me…even though my hotel has a pool 🏊🏽‍♀️ & AC. The Sud Ouest can get Very hot 🌞

  6. Carol, your "loose copy" of Turner's cathedral scene blows me away how you captured the essence of a crowd milling about with just a few brush strokes. C'est magnifique!

Thank you Gavin. I have always loved the simplified way Turner painted figures.

Enjoyed my visit to that charming city but would not enjoy it in that heat. AC hoteland gelato is more my speed.

Traveling during a heatwave 🥵 is NOT fun Suki. The same thing happened at Amsterdam Urban Sketchers annual meeting. And in Toulouse.
I would rather go to TROUVILLE just 2 hours away and walk by the ocean 🌊

  8. La Couronne -- that's where Julia had her first lunch in France and started her food obsession! Did you order the sole merniere (sp)? I love your pieces, all of them, and of course the Turners and Monets. What a wonderful spot to sketch and paint, no matter what the weather!

Julia’s special menu was not available on Saturday Jeanie.
Probably it depends on the supply of sole at the 🐟 poissonierie.

  9. Thanks for sharing your trip to Rouen! I’ve never been there so lots of fun to see. I think your paintings are lovely, wherever you paint them.
The hot weather is to be taken seriously, here in Australia we are used to it but it includes air conditioning, staying inside when it’s the hottest part of the day (going outside in the early morning and evening) etc etc. So do adjust your plans as needed to manage the heat.

(Okay, don’t mention cricket which we still play and watch in the very hot weather……🤪🏏)

Thank you Kirra for your Australian expertise.
We ALL need to learn how to cope with extreme heat 🌞 more and more.
Going out before noon 🕛 is a possibility. Afternoons are treacherous here where AC is limited.
I remember in Amsterdam how tree’s 🌳 provided shade for the parked cars 🚗
Not the pavements and pedestrians. It was a nightmare walking around.

Good to see that your hot weather has broken! I hesitate to ask if your apartment has air-conditioning. Ouch.

AC is not possible with French windows. Only department stores, museums, Airports. More metros with AC but the Metro stations below ground are cool 🥶

  13. Great fun - in good weather! I know the Impressionists painted outside in all weathers, but I'm not nearly as hardy. Warm and sunny, I'm happy to go out, Cold and wet - I stay in the studio!
