David Hockney sketchbook ๐Ÿ“•

I started looking at my old sketchbooks…

After watching David Hockney’s sketchbook ✍️

I love that he worked on a checked oilcloth tablecloth,

I didn’t paint these cherries ๐Ÿ’ on my tablecloth…I just imagined it.

From an exhibit at the Royal Academy, 2012
I  guess we’re all thinking about David Hockney this week…he seemed invincible.

A man who deeply loved ❤️  color.

And such a mark-maker ✍️
I was smitten with the way he painted  ๐ŸŽจ grass ๐Ÿ’š

We were lucky ๐Ÿ€ to have such a bright, joyous creative spirit in our lifetimes.

Anyhoo,

It’s fun to go back

And visit

Old sketchbook

Obsessions like TROUVILLE-sur-mer.

I love copying ✏️ Toulouse-Lautrec drawings ✍️

Lautrec
had the most fluid of lines. A master draftsman.

Most artists I know like to use fancy-brand sketchbooks. Moleskine used to be super hot. Now Stillman and Birn is the hot brand. Whenever I try these I get fed up and throw or give them away.

The superb artist, Ian Sidaway, still uses Moleskine. I’ve given him a few castoffs in frustration and he methodically fills them up with exquisite drawings and watercolors. You can follow him on Instagram.

Another fabulous artist, Lis Watkins (also on Instagram) loves❤️

Stillman and Birn (another I threw away in annoyance).

I am addicted to scrappy, little children’s cheep scribble, school  books ๐Ÿ“š of no distinction, mostly made by CLAIREFONTAINE
Go figure ๐Ÿคท‍♀️

I have, on occasion, made my own sketchbooks (with decorative cheese label stickers)

Pretty crudely thrown together, but very user-friendly.

Both Liz and Ian have beautiful collections of orderly sketchbooks, annotating year by year what they have done and where they have been ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

I would love ❤️ to have such a collection.

Being ADHD & dyslexic does not lend itself to orderliness.

I’m in the process of organizing piles of watercolor scraps and paintings. I will soon show a updated picture ๐Ÿ”œ ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿคž
Some of us thrive in the midst of mayhem…
This month’s PARIS LETTER ๐Ÿ’Œ will be going out ๐Ÿ“ฎ this week
❤️
David Hockney said as an artist ๐ŸŽจ
"You need 3 things for painting:
The hand ๐Ÿ–️
The eye ๐Ÿ‘️
And the heart ❤️
RIP David Hockney

‘Fresh’ is a good word to describe David Hockney’s personal vision. Not everyone has that gift.

Just saw the extensive David Hockney exhibit for the 4th time at the Portland Art Museum in Oregon. Even with all the larger crowds this week I took my time paying attention to all the details in his paintings. I love his use of color and I am always totally fascinated with how he captures people in his portraits. He will be greatly missed. -Suzanne P.

Your sketchbooks are my favorite for french class notes: Claire Fontaine! David Hockney's pool designs always reminded me of my time in Los Angeles and the Desert Southwest! Your artsy table is perfect! Anyone with your talent can work however is best for them ! That's my opinion! Love your spiriit that shows in your work!

Thanj you so very much for the link to David Hockney's sketchbook! I also just truly adored the photo of your studio drawing table space :)))))))))) Merci beaucoup for the good laugh about your crabbiness with the sketchbook du jour...it is difficult finding just the right thing isn't it.

I love spiral bound note and sketch books. I was given a posh hardback book for notes and sketches once and the first time I used it broke the spine of it. I felt awful! Now about 15 years later I have decided it was not fit for purpose ๐Ÿ˜‡ Have a great summer
