More from the fabulous Prix de Diane LONGINES.
I had a bit of Irish luck 🍀 on the shuttle bus. A French man sat next to me…on my jacket in fact. But I asked him, as an ice 🧊 breaker, “Pas de chapeau”?
But joking is my specialty with total strangers. He was telling me about the ‘chapeau melon’ French men used to wear to the races
As we drew near, he offered me a ticket 🎟️
I said I already had one. He indicated his was better.
At the entry, Gerard handed me a printed ticket 🎟️ He said it had ‘Access Balance’. I thought this was the clubhouse. We parted ways never to meet again in the maddening crowd.
In fact ‘ACCESS BALANCES’ gave me coveted entré into the inner circle, where the horses 🏇 are paraded before and after each race!
All the creme de la creme, horse owners, people of note were milling around in this exclusive arena.
BIG MERCI Gerard, where ever you are ❤️
I noticed a woman of distinction nearby, being interviewed for French TV. I took a quick picture. Later I discovered it was Princess Zahra Aga Kahn, daughter of the late Aga Kahn, one of the most important horse breeders in France 🇫🇷 Their horses win 🏆 all the time.
They gave out the prize for the best hat - a Longines watch + a Ladurée lunch box to a lovely young woman with a giant horse 🐎 galloping on her head.
I thought my hat might have received an honorable mention since it was ‘horsy’ in spirit, if not a twirling, feathery extravaganza.
A French woman behind me, complimented me on my hat!
She recognized every horse pin! We chatted. Her late husband was a trainer and a relative was a famous rider/painter in the renown Le Cadet noir de Saumur. *SAUMUR is on my must-visit horse list.
Every horse 🐎 and jockey running at the Prix has previous wins at other races. It’s quite the prestigious event. It was lovely to be at the center of action ❤️
France 🇫🇷 really is very good at fêtes 🎈and celebrations 🎉
The French know how to have a good time 🍾 in a pleasant way that does not go off the deep-end crazy.
All Hats on Etsy now.
How lucky! Bon chance! Isabelle
ReplyDeleteThank you Isabelle 🍀
DeleteI was happy I had my horseshoe in my purse.
Good fortune to meet this gentleman. What do you wear to the race? And do you have a hat? Looking at the photos, everyone seems to be dressed quite nicely.
ReplyDeleteI dressed comfortably since I wanted to run around and take pictures.
DeleteA fancy dress was not going to hack it. My attire is in the previous Prix de Diane post.
I stitched my hat rather last minute (1:30 am the night before).

Wow, what wonderful good fortune, Carol to meet Gerald and for him to offer you a ticket to the coveted inner circle. You just never know where talking to strangers will take you (especially on the way to the races). I loved the post.
ReplyDeleteAin’t that the truth Donna. You never know who you might meet, if you are open to it ☺️
DeleteSuch a lovely, festive day! Beautiful people, princesses, Laduree box lunches! It makes me want to go to the races! The Cadre Noir in Saumur has become the National Equestrian School… that is right in your wheelhouse…you must go, Carol! Love your hat!
ReplyDeleteI Hope we will go together 🏇 when you are in Paris Bonnie!
DeleteI love your posts. I learn so much! BTW, got your lovely watercolor gift. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteWonderful Melissa ❤️
DeleteWonderful post, Carol. Glad you still have that curiosity and energy and LOVE for horses! For sure you will be even more addicted now, who might i meet on the shuttle!! 😇 CARLA
ReplyDeleteNow if only I could get a job in a horse farm and get up close and personal with the horses 🐎
DeleteI told you yesterday that your hat was the best. The French woman was correct.
ReplyDelete😄 Thank you Tucsonbabe! ❤️
DeleteI love seeing the hats too. I grew up in England and did an exchange with a French family when I was 15. I was placed with a family whose father was the caretaker of the chateau in Chantilly. The window of my bedroom opened onto the indoor horse training facility! I’ve never forgotten the whole 3 weeks I was there. The whole family were so nice and welcoming. Four children - 2 boys and 2 girls. We had such fun together and it definitely helped my French.
ReplyDeleteHow fabulous was that! I would love to be in your shoes Anne ❤️
DeleteSurprised to see tattoos on ladies. Are tattoos popular in France? They sure are popular here!
ReplyDeleteThey are more discrete and decorative rather then extreme and all over ❤️
DeleteWhat an exciting happenstance for you Carol, these moments are beyond valuable and I’m thrilled you had such a fabulous opportunity. Your hat was perfect and I’m sure more comfortable than some of the extravagant toppers.
ReplyDeleteVery exciting and completely unexpected!
DeleteMy hat felt like a ‘crown of thorns’. All those pins sticking into my head
“Beauty hurts” my mother used to say ❤️
You will have to learn how to speak Horse. Houyhnhnnms. JANE
ReplyDeleteCarol!!!
ReplyDeleteI just read your blog and LOVED it!!!!!

Merci Gerard! What a nice thing to offer you his spare extra access ticket. He would be glad you enjoyed using it so well.
ReplyDeleteYour painting of the horses at the top is excellent, I love how you have done the head with the great elegance that horses have.
This sounds like a real fun day at the races! Even a compliment on your hat.
