1925-2025 - 100 years of Art Deco - Musée des Arts Décoratifs, L’Orient Express

On New Years Eve day I went to 100 years of Art Deco at MAD. It is on till 26 April.

I thought it would be empty. HA!
No way! It was Crowded.

Being dyslexic,

Instead of starting the beginning upstairs at room #1,

I ended up

At the end

Of the exhibit

In the Orient Express area #17

An upended view of the train 🚊 like my head 🙃

A.M.Cassandra (1901 - 1968) posters for the train are some of the best graphics ever designed.

Every decorative element

Is presented

For viewing,

Which is quite thrilling,

Considering in 2014 the fabulous L’Orient Express exhibition
at La Monde Arab,

You could enter the train and walk through the corridors.

There was of course

An Agatha Christie 📚 🔍 table onboard…

You can listen to, ‘MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS’ read by David Suchet. Voila!

No mention of dear Agatha at the MAD Art Deco exhibit, sadly, even though reconstructions of the dining car

And bar car are represented.

As well as tableware. A big oversight in my opinion,

Agatha Christie (1890-1976) met her first husband on the trainHer first husband was invited to a ball on 12 October 1912 by Lady Clifford at her grand home Ugbrooke House in Chudleigh. A description of the meeting with Christie is given by Agatha in her autobiography: Christie came my way quite soon in the dance.

You can take the Orient Express overnight from Paris to Venice in a 24 hour train ride for a mere $9k?

That includes a splendid bedroom suite.

But for those on a budget…and willing to cope with bunk beds,
£3,885. will do it.
How many watercolors would that take? 🤔

Watch a fascinating 5 minute video on the present day Orient Express.

Want some historical background? Watch this.

It makes you want to run, pack your suitcase 🧳

The train departs from Gare de L’Est in Paris.

I wonder did  Chanel take the Orient Express like in this stunning Chanel No.5 ad starring AMÉLIE.

❤️ HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE ❤️

  1. Love MAD, though we were only in the shop in December..queues long then..will try again next month. Though I 'came away with’ some lovely books, as in, took the titles and had them sent..way too heavy to carry..

Gorgeous photos, thank you! With I could go to this. We saw their exhibit on the development of Parisian department stores a couple of years ago. Dying to go back to MAD!

MAD has so many ‘must see’ exhibits. Thanks for taking us along! Clever you, actually, starting at the end…the Orient Express probably would have been even more crowded had you waited. It would be thrilling going to Venice on that train but @ 375 $/€ (?) per hour, how could you sleep?! I’d spend the night ordering room service! Happy New Year, Carol! 🥂🍾

      I wouldn’t sleep either…especially in a bunk bed 🛏️

It’s 161.87 per hour for the bunk bed option.
      You’re going deluxe

No , Agatha met Archibald Christie at an Army dance in Exeter UK in October 1912 - not on the Orient Express . He was in the Army and they were married soon after . She only used this train in her murder mystery story .

Thank you. I corrected that tidbit of misinformation 👍
What inspired Agatha Christie to write about the Orient Express?
Christie took the Orient Express on a number of occasions in the following years, including one journey during which the train was halted for 24 hours because of heavy rains and floods.
… she was inspired partly by an incident in 1929 when the Orient Express was trapped in a blizzard in Çerkezköy, Turkey, where it was marooned for six days!

Not exactly Exeter…Her first husband was invited to a ball on 12 October 1912 by Lady Clifford at her grand home Ugbrooke House in Chudleigh. A description of the meeting with Christie is given by Agatha in her autobiography: Christie came my way quite soon in the dance.

Absolutely one of the best perfume ads ever, made by the director of AMÉLIE, Jean-Pierre Jeunet

Thanks for the Orient Express tour. I just looked up $9,000 for 24 hours is $375 an hour! Don’t think I can afford that either.
