A Night At The Opera, Theatre Champs-Elysées, Le Relais Plaza

A kind PBer invited me yesterday to a night at the opera 👏

And for a late dinner after 🥂
Have you been to Theatre Champs-Elysées? Built in 1913 by G. Perret, van de Velde, and A.Perret.
It’s a beautiful, classic Art Deco theatre
On 16, Avenue Montaigne, 8e
I went in 2018 to see the Nut Cracker Suite with Bonnie, Rob & Bear  🐻
Are you wondering what to wear to the opera? I was.
Anything goes as long as it’s toute en noir/all-black. Plus the obligatory red 🧣 Fortunately I wore exactly that. Merci Dieu🙏
Fortunately we had fabulous seats on the Premiere Étage in a box, no less.
Unfortunately Uranus, the bull & his Ingres-like Valentine ❤️ date were sitting in front of us 🙄 oblivious that 4 other people were behind them hoping for a glimpse at the stage.
Did I mention we were seeing the divine Baroque opera (in modern dress) by G.F. Handel, Semele for 3 hours. My opera date warned me of violence 🔪 in the 3rd act. Good news is, being semi-narcoleptic in dark places, I snoozed 😴 through all the bloody bits 🤸‍♂️
At 10:30 PM we headed out for dinner at the appropriately Art Deco restaurant, Le Relais Plaza down the street.
You’ll want to study Le Relais Plaza menu/le carte.
My cod in sauce Clementine with leeks was uninspired, tasteless…
But the caramel au beurre salé (île Flottant for 2) certainly was 👍
It tasted better than it looked 👁️ on the plate.
Around 1:00 AM I turned into a pumpkin 🎃 when both Metro 9 & bus 72 stopped running 🫣
Fortunately a kind taxi 🚖 came along & saved 🛟 me 🙏
Normally in Paris a taxi 🚖 won’t stop for you unless you’re at a TAXI STAND☝️
👏 THANK YOU kind PBer for a very grand evening 👏
I hope you enjoyed it too ☺️
❤️ HAPPY VALENTINS DAY ❤️

With the exception of the giant who sat in front of you (the bane of my existence at 4’9”!), the opera sounds like an amazing Paris experience. I will add it to my list of things to do the next time I am there. I also 😍the twilight photo at the end of the post! I would print and hang that one of I had taken it!😊

What a delight to read about your trip to the opera, with seats in the box! Did you flirt with someone, looking over your fan? Margie

I sat in the box next to yours in the mid 1960’s when Charlie Chaplin’s daughter, Geraldine Chaplin made her Paris debut with the Royal London Ballet in the ballet “Cinderella”. My sister and I attended with our parents. Everyone was wearing black then too.
We were the only children in attendance that evening. Thank you for the photos.

Sometimes, no matter what production is on stage, the best part of a night at the theatre is spent people watching! In recent times Ive been disappointed to see a trend to more casual attire. I want to spread the word: glamour, go for glamour!!

Ah yes…some dress quite casually. US running shoes 👟 are to blame imo

Sounds like you had a great night…it’s good to break out of our routines now and again. You have a great group of Paris Breakfast followers.

Theatre des Champs-Elysées is fabulous in every way except for sight lines! Twice we’ve had orchestra seats, which were great, but then we had ‘nose bleed’ seats which had absolutely no room for our legs. Yikes!

Your dinner looked yummy. Glad you had a night out. Happy Valentines. 💝

  8. Thank you for sharing. Here in San Francisco, many of the people in my age group (I'm 77) wear sneakers, jeans and fleece to the opera and ballet. Thank goodness some, as I, dress in velvet, lace, and sparkles. The young women wear beautiful dresses and high heels--on opening nights they are often in gowns. The young men wear suits or expensive tailored shirts with very nice leather shoes. I guess many in my age group are still loving Haight Ashbury and Woodstock

I love to read of your wonderful experiences in Paris. (and I love your illustrations) They are in my to-do list when I visit Paris. I commiserate with your big-head blocked vision. I am 5 ft and sometimes bring a pillow to sit on so I can see the stage when a big-head is in front of me,

      Good idea 👍
Funny how clueless these ‘big heads’ are about the rest of us 😬

  13. Thanks for taking us to the Opera!
Last time I was in Paris I did a tour of the Opera Garnier and then went to the ballet at Opera Bastille, both were lots of fun. Will have to go to the opera one day.
Did have an annoying sighing guy next to me at the ballet though, thought he and his partner would leave in one of the two intervals but they didn’t!
Had an early dinner before the ballet, as wasn’t sure about getting dinner afterwards. Turns out they had sandwiches to buy during the intervals! I just got a glass of champagne but next time I’ll get a sandwich too.
(In Berlin I’ve had a nice fresh pretzel and sparkling wine during interval at the Philharmonie).

A pretzel 🥨 & wine sounds like a fun opera snack Kirra!
Having annoying neighbors at the theater is the WORST…so distracting 🙄
