Drawing your cake thumbnails

           At last we’re drawing CAKE🤸‍♂️ in Thumbnail class👍👏 🍾

Finally something I can sink my teeth 🦷 into 😂

Happy, happy happy ☺️

The pastries
in the UK...are a bit triste

David Leibovitz recently said Paris pastries are highly colorful..

As he showed one of his Summer fruit galettes

Yesterday I went browsing at Patisserie Michalak

Yep he’s right 👍

But I love em. I ran 🏃‍♂️ out & got FOUR pastries at Boulanger de La Tour.

First the thumbnail drawings ✏️…

Then thumbnail watercolors. Which I should do more often…really fun.

Et voilà

Oh and the tartelette au Citron sitting in the vitrine

Meanwhile I’m thinking how can I go more Morandi watercolors, with less line and more minimal bla bla

Not to forget the lush, creamy Paris-Brest sitting in the window

It lost height by the time it got home. They swore the box was tall enough - it was not. Plus the pastry needs to be stuck on to the cardboard base with sugar syrup - they were not. They went slip, sliding around.

The next morning…forget about it 😂
Paris-Brests don’t have a long shelf life…

At La Grand Colbert the poor staff, end of service, must be stuffing themselves
every night 😊👏👏

I ended up

Painting the Paris-Brests in the window.

I found out today (thank you Instagram) how to eat Paris-Brest.
1. Remove the ‘hat’
            2. Slice down through the cream
I have been doing it all wrong. I must rectify the situation👍

Plus for thumbnail class we were supposed to do 3 pastry views - overhead, sideways & cut-away.

Maybe I should I do a Paris-Brest map this month? 🤔

Plus the Tour de France 🇫🇷 is going on 🚴!

Carol, So beautiful! I could eat the fondant chocolat and its delicate doily right off the paper!

Thank you for making my evening so delightful, looking at your art!

  3. The pastries in Paris are delectable! I know you enjoyed your “research” for these thumb nails.I have never eaten a Paris-Brest. Good to know how to cut & eat it properly.🗼❤️

I don’t think I have eaten a Paris-Brest either until recently. They ARE delectable indeed 👏 There is Almond Pralinée in the bottom chou = delish.

Only you could have a watercolor instructor who assigns pastries! You were born under a lucky star. Paris pastries are in a world all of their own…and you paint them so well. Plus, we got a ‘how to’ eat a Paris-Brest! 🙏🏻

We’re faithfully watching the Tour de France live early each morning. It (and the scenery!), has been thrilling. Will be sad when it wraps up in Paris Sunday.

Eating the pastries helps with painting them quite a bit 😊

I just love your Fondant chocolat painting, Carole! The pastry itself looks fab, but for me it is the colours you used - they are so joyful! The plate is glorious, the spoon amazing. Plus you magically put the gloss on the fondant - how in the world do you do that? What is the very nicely co-ordinating orange "lozenge" in the lower left corner? It adds an unexpected flash of shazam to your painting. -k/maine-usa.

The orange logo paper is from the boulangerie - they used to be made of chocolate. Some still do.

Oh, man. That's just so French. Such an elegant touch. Not that the customer doesn't pay for it, of course. In the end.

  7. Paris pastries are so different than what I'm used to here in northern Michigan--donuts and long johns. Lumberjack food! I'm so enjoying your class assignments!

Paris pastries are very different than New York as well!
A very competitive and creative industry!

Fun, fun, fun- I think I had as much fun reading this as you did painting and now that I know how to eat a Paris Brest, I can buy one next trip and not offend the pastry gods.

I definitely did not eat my P-B correctly at LA GRAND COLBERT ☹️
      I feel Deep shame…in retrospect.

  13. Your watercolors look more delicious than the real things. On 20 July 1969, I, too, was standing in front of a Paris storefront, but not looking at pastries to sketch. It was an appliance store and a crowd of us were watching the TVs in the window to witness the first US astronaut walking on the moon.
