Riviera Colors

By popular request more Riviera this and that for hungry travelers 🧳 I loved this huge watermelon 🍉 umbrella in the Cannes pedestrian shopping area.

Tomato red umbrellas in a Nice cafe..so jolly.

Carolyn’s lunch at Le Safari in Nice. We tried the mozza with tomatoes everywhere we went but none topped those at Cafe Hoche in Cannes. Its like that when you travel isn’t it 😊 You keep trying out a particular dish over and over and its never quite as good.

The colors and patterns reminded me of these big paper cutouts in the Matisse museum on the ground floor.

Carolyn wanted a vrai salade Niçoise and it came in a bowl at Le Safari with a big leek on top! Is that allowed? I happily ate her anchovies. I am always available to help out with anchovies.

A small greeny park in Cannes.

Ladurée greens on rue Antibes in Cannes.

I would have loved to go into this Citrons of Menton shop in Cannes but Carolyn was looking for lounge dresses…

Ballerina shop, Repetto in Cannes on rue Antibes.

Tarte Tropezienne is all over the Riviera (originated in Saint Tropez) and not really a tarte but a giant, flat cream puffy thing.

The best sardines in France. Also the priciest but worth it if you’re into sardines. I am.

An essential ‘online’ map of the shuttle train coastline. No longer available in print, so save this for your next trip.

A look in Van Cleef and Arpels window. I coveted the copies in the cheapie shops. Who’s going to know?Carolyn vetoed that idea 🤔

Lovely figure painting at the Matisse museum and a photo of the same scalloped chair in his house.
An older gal sitting next to us at le Safari (not wearing polka dots). I’m off to a preview at the Paris Louvre soon. I almost said the Met. Guess where I am?If you'd like Parisbreakfast letters, maps and watercolors in your mailbox, do take a look in my shop.
Bon Tuesday PBers🥂🍾☕️🥐Happy Riviera breakfast

  1. Thanks for sharing this adventure. I must admit that I removed this one from my FB page, though. The lovely picture of the watermelon umbrella would be considered offensive in the US because of the race of the people beneath it. I don't know about France, but when I watch British plays or TV shows, it seems as if there is more mixing of races in couples. Media in the US seems less so, sadly. In light of the Black Lives Matter movement and the marches during the trump administration, I didn't want your beautiful share to light any fires or debates about watermelon/Black faces. I repeat that I thought it was lovely. I just didn't want it to be a "trigger." The art of it doesn't deserve any adverse thoughts.

    1. This is so interesting to me because it shows how our country has become divided along geographic and political lines. Where I live, in the northeast, this would not be the least bit offensive. The “people” under the umbrella are mannequins, made of a black material; not made to represent a mixed race couple. And, actually, I’ve noticed many more varieties of people in advertising these days- all colors of the rainbow, and all genders, too. I never thought I would see a same sex couple dancing on a rooftop in an ad for depression medication. I welcome it all and try to encourage its acceptance when I can. By supporting the diversity, I might help others to see the world in a different way. I know it’s not the same in many parts of the country and I appreciate how difficult it might be. If we all do what we can, from where we are, we can move our country and the world forward. Thank you for sharing what this photo brought out for you. (Carol, I apologize in advance if my reply to L. is inappropriate. This is an example of how I am learning to speak up - but I am aware that this is your forum and it may be out of bounds. I trust you to delete it if you need to.). 🇺🇸🇫🇷🇺🇸🇫🇷

  9. Thank you for speaking up BARBARA
And you can spell clothes dummies! 👏
I cannot and I worked on 7th Ave! Shame on me.
Don’t watermelons have rights too? Would a watermelon and feta cheese salad distress the Greeks?
Enough of making mountains out of molehills 😊

  10. I adore watermelon. I don't quite get the first comment. I'm in the US and watermelon is a summer staple wherever you go. And you can't beat the colors! I'm not sure I get why a watermelon umbrella would be offensive but I guess if I was in the Riviera I would probably come home and inadvertently offend a lot of people because I'd buy that umbrella in a snap -- cute but not flashy! And isn't sardine packaging always great? I love those tins. True story -- when I was a kid, my Easter basket always included sardines, creamed herring and olives. Old habits die hard! That salad looks fab!

  11. I never noticed color..on the mannequins♥I simply saw the watermelon.♥
    I love that about me.LOL I do.

That older lady..oh my could she be 67 and I am an older lady too..looks chic and swell.

I love empty cleaned sardine cans to serve hummus and such..J loves sardnes..I can eat them but put the can outside .
Cannes..was nice to vist albeit short and sweet for us.
La Croisette looking down and the groups of bare chested older gentlemen playing cards..the bare breasted beauties..the umbrellas gleaming in the sun w/ the water sparkling..
I met a lonely wealthy lady there and we chatted.
    She wished for friends.
    She was beautiful.
    The things one remembers.

  15. I'm going to try sardines like you mentioned. My dad ate them on soda crackers when he was delivering produce to small grocery stores a long time ago. Thanks for giving us a taste of Nice. Maybe I'll make it there one more time...

  18. Loved every bit of this post but especially the umbrella (didn't notice what was under it and wouldn't have thought anything of it), the salade nicoise with the beautiful anchovies and the very French Rivieraish girl in black - she is stunning & looks like she belongs on that street.

When I saw that Watermelon umbrella my first thought was "how very realistic that looks, I wonder if I can find it online" . It is so colorful and summery.as we head into Autumn in Oregon I look for things that help me feel happy. (Like reading your blog)I can not imagine anyone in my state who would be offended by the Clothes Dummies. You really are very lucky to be in France! Did you eat one of those Tarte Tropeziennes? Your trip looks so wonderful. Those colorful cafes are so wonderful! Thank you!
