Lobster Shake, watercolor, 9" x 11"
I was painting this lobster when the earth shook at 1:59 or so.
I picked him up by accident on Saturday. You know how things go.
He was in good company. I could have chosen any of his friends nearby.
All so attractive. 
Lobsters are a favorite of mine from way back. It was my ritual birthday dinner since I was 5, so what do you expect? 
Last night I headed to Staples and more lobsters stopped me in my tracks. Direct from Maine no less. I'd heard a lot of talk about Luke. His reputations preceeds him. This guy is famous for being fresh, but sometimes a girl has to take a chance anyway. 
I studied his street creds carefully.
Whoa $16 bucks for a lobster sandwich? I'd bought a cooked lobster at Union Sq Market for half that. 
This guy has to be something!
A girl came by with her boyfriend. I heard her say,
"I don't care. I'm getting one and you can't have any"
"I don't care. I'm getting one and you can't have any"
"Oh..OK?
I started having second thoughts...that good?
I decided to show some restraint and ordered only half lobster sandwich. This better be good I'm thinking. At least the little box can be reused to carry macarons. 
PBers, I'm here to tell you this is the BEST lobster roll I've ever eaten. Certainly far better than that precooked lobster 🦞 I ate Saturday. Who knew? This guy, Luke does it right! I'll be back for more. Big FRESH chunks of lobster straight from Maine. No mayo in sight. Just a tiny, drizzle of butter on a nicely toasted bun. Heavens PBers, I'm telling you. If this guy went to Paris, he'd make out like a bandit and I'd be 1st in line. Well worth every penny.
Luke's Lobster can be found in Union Square several days a week in front of Staples. If you live out of town high tail it over here right now, even if we do have the occasional earthquake or so.

LOVE your painting, Carol! Your lobster and corn are making me drool. That sandwich sounds delicious, too. I could so go for one of those right now. We felt the quake here too. My brother and sister were both in the DC area and I was worried about them but they're all ok, excepting for, as my brother said, "mere flesh wounds."

ReplyDeleteI frequent "Nauti," the lobster truck and their UES location. The best! Reasonably priced! Huge chunks of meat, no mayo mix cutting up the goodness. Love love LOVE Luke's!

I am so jealous. Lobster down under is like eating cavier - its so expensive. Ours are different though little claws but they are delicious. Because of the expense having one on a roll seems amazing - yum yum .x

I confess, I can't get past the appearance of lobsters but that painting is awesome...one of your best yet.
ReplyDeleteOddly, felt no shaking here in NJ suburb 15 mi. west of Newark Airport but hubby evacuated from building in lower Manhattan....go figure.
My whole house shook here in South NJ! One cat was running scared & the other was lounging on a bed. Amazingly nothing fell!

ReplyDeleteWe had a 4.9 quake just under 10 mi from here a few months ago.
ReplyDeleteIt was an eeirie deep rumble & made our house seem to sort of undulate! It was felt in several states around us too. seems the natural gas companies were fracking right on an unknown fault line! we haven't had any more since the state stopped the practice along the fault.
You brought a sumptuous beauty to this lobster. You are reminding me to go have some lobster by the sea as I live here on the Maine coast & sometimes take for granted Maine's treats. Again, I enjoy your blog very much!

Lobster=YUM!!
So there's a Luke's lobster truck in NYC and in DC - does anyone know if there's one in Boston. I guess that I could google it and find out myself. I swear that I'm going to have to "lay off" your blog, Carol, because it's always guaranteed to make me hungry...even after a behind-the-scenes visit to a bakery and a tasting this morning in Paris. Now, for some odd reason, I'm craving lobster of all things!

ReplyDeleteI thought of you last night when we heard the news of the earthquake. My sister-in-law and family also live on the East coast (Philly) and my niece lives in NYC, so of course we were concerned for them too. Hope you have no more!

I have never had one of those rolls.... It looks so yummy. Love the painting. Having been born and raised in SO CAL I have been thru my share of earthquakes. They are never fun even if they do no damage. So glad all was well back there. Now lets hope the Hurricane doesnt do any damage that is heading toward the States.

ReplyDeleteLobster was your ritual birthday dinner, eh? When I was 9, I decided that my favorite and mandatory birthday dinner was broiled lobster, artichokes (I think it had something to do with all that melted butter) and chocolate malt cake with chocolate frosting. Makes my mouth water even now, just thinking about it... Add a few fried clams, and the menu would be perfect.
