Art Nouveau Jewelry at l’École des Arts Joailliers

All
these Art Nouveau doors have kept my head in a swirl

On Friday I went early to the Art Nouveau jewelry exhibition at
l’École des Arts Joailliers around the corner from Place Vendôme.

Almost 100 pieces

Gathered

From private collections

And museums.

Delicate display cases reflect the organic, swirly lines of Art Nouveau movement.

I wish I’d seen
this lecture video in English
(offered in French too) before I saw the exhibit

Or before I did the post…
Brooches, combs, pendants, rings where fauna and flora are illustrated

With plant patterns, flowers, insects & other
creatures
made from stones, metals and other precious materials.

The catalog had related Art Nouveau artworks not in the exhibit

This Odilon Redon poppy was in the exhibit.

I was seduced by the natural curvilinear forms
to paint this golden pendant.

All these curves & swirls sent me out for a pain au raisin

The exhibit closes September 30 & reservations are complet, but R. said just show up…there can be cancellations 🤞

I got there early (the exhibit opens at 11:00 am) & went wandering around Place Vendôme

Cartier at #21 has a red chariot offering OJ for those patiently waiting

I wonder if ‘Holly Go-Lightly’ would have waited for an OJ?
Don’t forget to stop in my Etsy shop. No reservations required 👍
                                   🥐 Happy Sunday PBers 🥐

My husband and I were there Saturday and, while the jewelry was lovely, folks with mobility issues should be aware that it is not a disability-friendly exhibit. My husband walks with a cane, has trouble climbing stairs and needs to sit frequently. There was an elevator to the first level but to get to the exhibit involved climbing up and down stairs. Fortunately, the exhibitors arranged a security guard for a work around for most of them but there was no place for him to sit in the exhibit so I did not linger as much as I wanted. I understand that buildings are old but France, in general, needs to work on disability access.

I’m sorry to hear this Julia. I’ve been visiting their exhibits for years. It is an antiquated setup in that nether chamber ☹️ The space is small and they made it extra dark for this exhibition.
Was it for atmosphere or conservation? I think the former.
I don’t think they’ve ever had a place to sit unfortunately.

  4. Thank you for sharing these magnificent pieces and your delightful impressions of them. Now, if only there really was a "pain au raison." We could make obstinate people eat it to see the light!

The pendant and the brooch are magnifique. They remind me of those worn by Kate Winslet in the film "Titanic". Love Paris and everything French.
By the way, i think you had a "pain aux raisins" . Have a great Sunday.

Wow! Beautiful jewelry. That first photo, butterfly/woman, is stunning. You always have something fascinating to show us dear Carol. ❤️

The basement exhibit area was probably formerly a cave for wine 🍷
It can’t be easy to renovate these heritage buildings…near impossible I would guess.

Do you want to change the caption on your last photo to “Cartier”, not Chanel? Re the chariot?

Lovely! I agree with the earlier comment that there is little to no disability access; my French relative who lived with me here in the US for years was stuck with the curb slopes with grids, electric wheelchairs, and certain parking for those with issues. He was shocked by the electric carts in the supermarkets; these are things we take for granted. I will take my cane on my next trip to France to steady myself on cobblestones for sure.

Paris cobblestones are fine & flat.
In Honfleur they are horribly bumpy!

We have reservations for that exhibit and now, I'm looking forward to it even more. I believe that as of Oct 1, they will be in a new space, more modern and much larger from what I read.
