"The whole worl's in a terrible state o' chassis.” ...Juno says from Sean O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock. One simply does not know what to make of it all.
The March Paris letter was inspired by Atelier des Lumieres 'Monet, Renoir...Chagall wonderful light show.
And this photo of Monet painting water lillies was inspiring.
Last week I went to the new Turner retrospective at musee Jacquemart-Andre. I'll report on it soon and other shows I've seen recently. They are all closed now, but waiting in the wings for better times 🙏🏻
The Seine has receded a bit. Another merci dieu🙏🏻
Do you watch France24 in English? It will keep you up to date on what's going on in Paris, like the ridiculous madness last Sunday when Parisians flooded parks picnicking and socializing after Saturday's closure of restaurants, cafes, pools, museums. Its hard not to binge watch the news now.
For a sane, calm voice out there, Dr. John Campbell, a British nurse, offers daily reports on the virus world-wide. His hand washing demo changed me forever. I've gone through bars of soap like popcorn. And I watch MedCam for a deep dive into microbiology. Its fascinating. Today at noon Lockdown was instituted.
I ran last minute to the marché, the bank and for last food items for the Lockdown larder.
Paris boulangeries will stay open along with supermarkets, banks, some post offices.
If you want to leave the house a printed document is required stating your reasons. Who has a printer? On verra bien🙏🏻
This morning I was so tempted to stock up on cookies and French jam but I resisted.
Instead I got frozen pineapple and black cherries. Coming home with loaded shopping bags I passed Diptyque and a huge waft of lovely perfume enveloped me. A moment to forget "The whole worl's in a terrible state o' chassis.” Please use SOCIAL DISTANCE as much as you can PBers. Stay Home🙏🏻 Please take good care of yourselves. You belong to me❤️🐻
I read that Paris closed the gardens and parks. My county in California closed all but what is considered essental business. We are told not to let the kids play on the playground equipment; however, so far, we can go outdoors if we keep to "social distance." I hope Paris will let Bear play outside if he stays off the monkey bars
ReplyDeleteFunny you shou,d say that Lynne,
DeleteBear is a big fan of the monkey bars.
I will make him wear those blue surgical gloves next time...
:-)
ReplyDelete♥
ReplyDeleteStay safe..
ReplyDeleteWe must all stay safe and stay home.
DeleteThanks Rachel ❤️
I'm not just social distancing, I'm self-quarantining, not because I have something but because I'm in that risk category and I have no desire to get something. After returning from Canada Sunday I've only been out to the store this morning for the last shop for a bit. Meanwhile, I have paint and wool, books and internet and a yard. Stay well, Carol. I do adore your current letter. And oh, to see the Turner (as well as the Atelier.) I hope all open again soon.
ReplyDeleteI think they are the same thing here.
DeleteHow nice you have a yard. We do have a small garden.
I will take advantage of it!
So glad you like the letter💌 Jeanie
I am taking online cooking classes and forget the outside world but love to read about you and the bear. It makes me smile.
ReplyDeleteAwww...thanks
DeleteMore 🐻 to come then
I can't imagine what lockdown is like with only a small apartment - at least here in California we have a house and large yards we can use once the rain stops. It is an unusual time and we need to keep our eyes on the beauty and our minds on the positive. Virtual hugs to you and bear, Carol, stay well.
ReplyDeleteLike most artists out there I'm often on 'lockdown'.
DeleteThere are often days when I dont leave the house because I'm pushing a pencil. But it is nice to have the option to walk around the block..
We do have a tiny garden in our courtyard and I will be 'doing the stairs' up and down maybe in a few minutes if I can finally get out of my jammies.
That was me, Suki, not unknown.
ReplyDeleteI was appalled to see people not taking things seriously and going out and about.
ReplyDeleteHere everything is closed..our borders except to the US as of today.People are desperately trying to get home.
Fab acts of kindness in the community.
A great leader..M.Francois Legault..QC Prime Minister..like having the best father.
Take care Carol..and Bear..always abreast of French news here France 2.
Your aquarelles are beautiful..and thank God for your passion and talent.
Mille merci Monique💋
DeleteLets hope we can paint out way throught this 🙏🏻🎨
Please stay safe Carol. Thinking of you.
ReplyDeleteEVERYONE STAY SAFE
DeleteAND STAY HOME🙏🏻
So happy to see you posting again!
ReplyDeleteYAY! Good for you...nice post! Your March Paris Letter is stunningly beautiful! So glad that you got it out while you still can.
ReplyDeleteMost kind Lara ❤️
DeleteI’ve heard you can go outside to walk your pet...is it time to put Bear on a leash?...would he stand for such a thing?! Glad you both have a room with a view, softens the blow from the lockdown a bit?
ReplyDelete🐻 Bear absolutely agrees with you that we should go walkies
DeleteGlad to see Boulangerie de la Tour is still open. It was very wise of them to put up rules...I’ve heard others saying that patrons of boulangeries were pressing up close against them...heaven forbid they’d leave more than 4” of space that someone could slip into and cut the line!
ReplyDeleteBoulangere never closes anyway
DeleteHolidays,August you name it always open
Merci dieu 🙏🏻🥐🥐🥐
Love your additions to the “Lockdown Larder”! France 24, on it’s Top Stories page, has a list of “Things You Can and Can’t Do” during the lockdown. You should take up jogging, apparently. Take a screenshot of that document, you can edit in the info using Markup, then you’ll have it on your iPad, if asked.
ReplyDeleteTake care Carol. We are gradually being restricted here in NW Indiana. Not that I am complaining. I would love to have 2 weeks to paint, sew, knit, do gardening.
ReplyDeleteThank you for continuing your posts - they are a breath of fresh air! Take care of yourself.
ReplyDeleteHello Carol and Bear.
ReplyDeleteI was happy to see your new post as I was thinking about you
as the virus zoomed through France.
Stay healthy and Be well.
You dont need to print it, its fine to copy the text and write it yourself on a paper
ReplyDeleteThanks Solli ❤️
DeleteHope you and Bear are doing well. We here in Denver are pretty much shut down. Hope all this is over soon...but qui sait????
ReplyDeleteJust had something about "herd immunity" on the news...very interesting.
Got this from a friend:
-China has closed down its last coronavirus hospital. Not enough new cases to support them.
- Doctors in India have been successful in treating Coronavirus. Combination of drugs used: Lopinavir, Retonovir, Oseltamivir along with Chlorphenamine. They are going to suggest same medicine, globally.
- Researchers of the Erasmus Medical Center claim to have found an antibody against coronavirus.
- A 103-year-old Chinese grandmother has made a full recovery from COVID-19 after being treated for 6 days in Wuhan, China.
- Apple reopens all 42 china stores,
- Cleveland Clinic developed a COVID-19 test that gives results in hours, not days.
- Good news from South Korea, where the number of new cases is declining.
- Italy is hit hard, experts say, only because they have the oldest population in Europe.
- Scientists in Israel likely to announce the development of a coronavirus vaccine.
- 3 Maryland coronavirus patients fully recovered; able to return to everyday life.
- A network of Canadian scientists are making excellent progress in Covid-19 research.
- A San Diego biotech company is developing a Covid-19 vaccine in collaboration with Duke University and National University of Singapore.
- Tulsa County's first positive COVID-19 case has recovered. This individual has had two negative tests, which is the indicator of recovery.
- All 7 patients who were getting treated for at Safdarjung hospital in New Delhi have recovered.
- Plasma from newly recovered patients from Covid -19 can treat others infected by Covid-19.
So it's not all bad news. Let's care for each other and stay focused on safety of those most vulnerable.
Stay safe! I enjoy your blogs very much - this one was particularly good. You captured difficulty with grace - you’re a responsible citizen + you appear to be able to keep your cool
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Noelle ❤️
DeleteThinking of you and hope you are well and able to enjoy even some short strolls on your precious ile Saint Louis. In the meantime, I hope you are painting and doing okay.
ReplyDeletePrecious you! Please take care. "Paris Breakfasts" is such an inspiring email. And so needed, especially now.
ReplyDeleteWHAT??? No fresh baguettes in the morning? Has it come to this? Mon Dieu!
ReplyDeletePlenty bread, just take yr turn
Deleteand wait outside 6 meters away from each other.
In line
With a bread-buying document in hand.
And not in jogging pants
Running shoes allowed.
We are mostly distancing in Canada. Just trips to the supermarket and walks for the dog, even though it is not the law yet. I have your two watercolours of Paris over my desk at home and dream of seeing Notre Dame and Place Vendome again when all of this is over. Stay safe.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jen
DeleteWe must all stay in to stay safe though I wish I had a dog to walk...
Thanks Carol. In the Washington, DC area, we are staying in and socially distancing like most others. One suggestion for amusement is to visit many of the world's museums and galleries online (the Smithsonian has this). Also, the New York Classical Theater facebook page (public) has fun items (Shakespeare soliloquies to recite instead of singing happy birthday to time your handwashing, etc.). I'll be reading longer books that have thus far gathered dust on my shelves. Stay safe.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joel for the great tips!
DeleteI will do a post abt Paris entertainments online soon 👏👏👏

Thanks for the lovely post Carol, and reminding us all to stay home if we can. I was shocked to see the Parisians going out Sunday in big groups, no wonder the police were called in. My sister and brother in Berlin can still go for walks in their parks, but they have to keep a distance. My relatives in the UK say the supermarket situation is crazy, they have to go when they open at 6am to get things they need. My cousin in Michigan got some free hand sanitiser from the local distillery who are now making it as well as gin.
ReplyDeleteIn Australia we are a week or so behind Europe and it is like watching a slow motion car crash. I am a teacher and they are making schools stay open so we all have to work, though everyone else has been told to work from home and keep 2 meters away from anyone else - impossible in a classroom. Teachers haven't been mentioned as being at risk, we're just babysitters for everyone else. It's pretty stressful.
SO thank you for showing me Paris from your apartment! I'm off to watch the hand washing video, to see if it's different to the one I've seen. Take care, Kirra :)
So delighted to hear from you Kirrabelle❤️
DeleteDear Carol, Thank you so much for the link to Dr. John Campbell's excellent videos. But I am worried about the Bear lookalike sitting on the shelf behind him. Please reassure us he has not been kidnapped and is with you safe and well! Perhaps it is a relative of Bear?
ReplyDeleteIn self-isolation your blog is even more comforting than ever - if that is possible!
Angela
Thank you Angela for the 1st giggle of the day
DeleteBear is right here beside me and not mixing with any other bears...so far 🐻👍🏻
