Surviving the Paris Heatwave

M.I.A. I'm trying to keep cool with shutters shut, frequent tepid showers, (I even tried the damp T-shirt last night and it works. Hooray). Plenty of watermelon/pastaque. Did you know French ice cubes/glaรงon are actually sparkling water? Champagne would be nice too. Sooo classy. I have a new blue water bottle. Goodby plastique. And hello Vide Grenier.

I would really love to sleep in our entryway. Stone cold. Living in a
6th floor chambre de bonne has great views but freezing in winter and torrid in summer. C'est la vie.

Can you believe the sky Monday morning? Never saw anything like it.

Yesterday I dipped in a new pool, Piscine Keller and its outside in summer. Who knew. My 3-month city pool card (22€ for seniors) gets me into most of Paris' 38(!) community pools. Why did I move to Paris? ๐ŸŠ‍♀️๐ŸŠ‍♀️

Sunday I bought this hat (1€) at the Vide Grenier on boulevard Henri IV.

The community 'yard sale' costs 15€ To rent a space with tables provided. Most stuff is 50 centimes to 2 'bucks'. Not all of course but fancy antique dealers are MIA. There was also a
Croix Rouge stand with lots of designer Max Mara at ridiculous prices. Keep an eye out for posters. These go on all over town on Sundays.

My latest doodles..for
Elaine Sciolino's new Seine book map.

On Saturday I bought this boite/ bunch of tight peony/pivoine buds (10€) to paint for you. Almost immediately they bust wide open.wow

This afternoon at 14:00 precisely I have my annual visa rendezvous at the Prefecture. Please pray they let me stay on. And that I don't melt in the heat waiting. Thanks for reading Parisbreakfast. Share with a friend. Indulge yourself and

  2. I love this post!
I feel for you ..of course we see the news..and know of la canicule.Must be so hot for you.I could not have imagined your entry way looked like this from the outside of your beautiful blue doors.
    How pretty Carol.
Thank God you love to swim and the water..hope this brings you some comfort..I never knew ice was sparkling water in Paris.

    1. Awww.... thank you dear Monique!
What a nice response. Almost all the entry ways on this street look like this. Horse and carriages drove through them. Stable is in the back, but we are the only building with a small garden in the courtyard. Very lucky indeed.

  3. The worst is yet to come. We are being told 40 for Friday. It's very windy, which makes it more bearable. Good luck to you! A pool will probably be in my future, too.
€15 with tables is a good deal for a vide grenier placement. We usually pay €3 per meter, and have to bring our own tables, which take up space in the car.

    1. Wow they are sticklers for detail in the sticks. One would not expect that. Peep here spread their stuff around, taking up lots of space, overflowing..
Today was supposed to be 93 and it is 83. Still it feels like 100 to me, especially at the non-AC Prefecture.

  4. America, at least my part of it, is cool and soaking this summer and Europe so hot! That entryway looks like a little haven. I love the vides greniers. And lucky you with the very reasonable pool pass!Looks wonderful. I'm grateful you can dive in while it is so hot.

Love your beautiful peonies (mine always are loaded with ants!) and your doodles. Best of luck in Visa-land!

  6. In Vancouver, we have had almost no rain in May or June. It is so unusual! You passed! The vide grenier is such a good idea. We live in an apartment and I always have stuff to donate or sell. In Paris, you don't need a yard, driveway or the expense of a big table. Beautiful peonies!

  7. That sky is amazing, I love the hat and, of course you passed - they would be fools to let you get away. I bought myself a bunch of peonies a couple of weeks ago as we can't grow them in CA and they are a favorite of mine.

    1. A Very unusual sky for Paris!
Peonies are delicate creatures. They dont like heat...prefer the shade or dark!

So glad to hear you’re surviving! That rooftop apartment must be an oven! I hope that movie theaters and libraries are air conditioned, too.

    1. Paris metro stations are super cool underground. The trains create a breeze.
I saw someone leisurely reading a book there. And you can stay till midnight

And, I love your “people” sketches. They are so alive.
I am sure France let you stay today at your meeting.
You love it there and they should love you.

Paris plage comes in July. I see tons of people hanging out along the Seine so there must be a breeze but I must go check to be sure..

When you are done with the hat can you send it to me?
Loved this Paris Breakfast, especially peonies and cherries. (actually like them all)
Do Parisians drink iced tea? Ice cubes made of tea don’t dilute the tea.

  16. I hope you’re able to stay somewhat cool. The European heat waves always sound so brutal. Southwest Florida is pretty hot right now too so I’m staying inside most of the time, in fact, all of the time.
Do you have a walk up or an elevator? And do you have a courtyard?
