Rue Montorgueil Map, L'Escargot

Saint Eustache is a late Gothic cathedral (1300-1500) at the apex of rue Montmartre and rue Montorgueil.
The height and space are simply mind blowing.
By the way there are free Sunday organ concerts from 5:30 -  6:00 pm.
There are so many gorgeous churches to discover in Paris.
Do you have a favorite church?
FYI the big round windows are called 'rose' because of the circular rose petal pattern (this one is Notre Dame).
When you come out of Metro Les Halles at exit Rambeauteau, Saint Eustache awaits. Don't miss it.
Some PBers have asked about proper cathedral dress code. Bathing suits and flip flops are out. Scooters are IN.
Turn left up rue Montmartre on Thursdays/Sundays for an outdoor morning marché Saint Eustache.
Or turn left onto rue Montorgueil to find L'Escargot and the best snails in the city in 4 different flavors (curry, roquefort, traditional butter, parsley and garlic).
A lovely 19th century interior.
I walked in early with no reservation & ordered the formule for 17,50.
IIfyou're going to draw escargot, you've got to eat them. They are delicious. Mostly garlicy, buttery, parsleyed sauce on toast points or 'soldiers'. Ooops I forgot to show the 🐌 snails!
Moving along on the August map - my printshop opens tomorrow after their summer vacation. I'll be burning the midnight oil tonight.
Have you hung any of your

  7. Here are two churches you should check out, if you’ve never been.
This one comes in second, for me, after Ste. Chapelle.
Saint-Étienne-du-Mont. Behind the Pantheon. Interior is beautiful.
And Église Saint-Augustin de Paris in Place Saint-Augustin. It is huge and the first church to use cast iron in its construction.

  8. Such beautiful churches, all over France, never get bored visiting churches. How fantastic to see your sketches made into huge posters, it must be fantastic for your ego , You should get them made into table mats for all your favourite eating places, I can never see you wanting to leave Paris, good for you.

Carol, I am so delighted to see your art being hung! How did it come about? You are famous now. The idea above of place mats from your maps or you Paris letter is a great one? I wonder how difficult that would be to pull off. The could be hard or soft as long as they are wipeable! Congratulations! I love the view our your window on your Isle. The rooftops of Paris. Always something going on, cats basking in the sun, safe from many chiens below, ha ha

    St.Sulpice!
Thank you for the pictures of St. Eustache. We've never been there but it's now on my list for our visit in September! I'm sure you've been to "Église St. Sulpice". I was drawn there by its famous organist, Charles Marie Widor, and the fabulous organ. His Tocotta from his Symphony for Organ #5 is one of my favorites (played for wedding recessionals). Anyway, we went there just to hear the organ and began to learn about the history of the church itself. We loved it

    Favorite Paris church:
    Saint Etienne du Mont
I am a descendant of very early Quebec settlers. In doing some genealogy research, I discovered that I had 6 ancestors who were baptized in this church. I probably would never have found this church without that information. It is magical! They even have a stained glass window dedicated to those who left to settle in the new world
    Merci et bonne visite

  20. I am using your maps in my scrapbook of my last trip as we walked all those streets and I am saving the business cards and your notes for our next trip (Fall 2017). Saint Eustache has always been my favorite church but I also love the chandeliers in Saint Nicholas du Chardonnet (very near Saint Etienne du Mont).

  24. I have always stayed around St Suplice ... Love the hood. I never thought too much of the inside until I landed early one Sunday morning, needing to kill time I went to a service there. It was magical and I learned that there are organ recitals there regularly. Turns out that organ is fairly famous in the organ world.

I highly recommend a service ... I sat at the very back and was fine.

  25. My goodness - each time I have literally run past Saint Eustache since it's just a few metres away from my favourite baking shops and haven't even taken the time to go in! Thanks Carol for the push to check it out after all this time!

Very clever on your fabulous maps - love how you've "postered" them. My favourite map is still in "Teatime in Paris" ;-)

I also love St Sulpice - especially for the organ since Charles-Marie Widor, my favourite organ composer, was officially only assistant organist but stayed in the post for 64 yrs! He wrote Toccata (from his 5th symphony) and we had it at our wedding - so did Queen Elizabeth of England, hehe! If you've heard the piece you'll know how exhilarating it is ... The Madeleine Church is also great.

  26. I love St. Sulpice and St. Roch. but outside Paris....Cathedral St. Gatien in Tours is by far my favorite the stained glass is magnificent!! It would be a nice 'day trip'. The church is not far from the train station and the beautiful 'old town' with the timbered buildings.

I like the interior shot in the art gallery, too - nice colors, light & angles.
What's with the map on the billboard? Have your maps been discovered by the powers-that-be and now grace the streets of Paris?

I like the Cathedédrale Alexandre Nevsky de Paris in rue Daru. Saint-Étienne-du-Mont next to the Panthéon also has nice features. And a very modern church is the Cathédrale de la Résurrection d'Evry in the south of Paris.

  29. I love your blog. Thank you. You should visit the cathedral of Saint Denis in the north of Paris. It is impressive. The kings of France used to be buried there. The novel Pillars of the Earth talks about the construction of this cathedral.
