Yesterday on my B'day Jeanne and I went to the Perigord à Montmartre.
Held at Montmartre by Sacre Coeur
For the perfect lunch.
Dessert First SVP! Hey it's my B'day
Fraises/strawbs direct from the Dordogne with Chantilly whipped cream piled on top
Next door figs from Norbert Echourgnac filled with heavenly foie gras. Just a gouter/taste did the trick. Insanely riche.
We had the best canele ever we both agreed. Not too sweet yet that perfect balance between cake and custard - so hard to get these babies right IMHO. I went back again today to get another and more strawbs and.
Pretty little bottles of flavored syrups - rose, rhubarb, black current.
Regional walnuts/noix in the shell or out and caramelized !
We shared a perfect half dozen of farm-raised escargot served with a little apero toast and a marinated snail. Heaven.
And just the right amount from Terre d'Escargots. The garlicky-parsley aromas were...oh heck!
This gentleman farmer had wonderful canard something or other and honeys from Château de Fayolle. You can visit and stay as well. There's a pool.
Chèvre/goat cheese in all ranges from fresh to Very aged.
These weekend French regional fairs are always announced in PariScope. Plenty of maps and guides were provided. What a great way to find out about an area before visiting. This British man was showing his Mum the postcard she bought of the ride down the Montmartre funicular...

I longed for just one of those amazing strawberries, then I tried to imagine fig + fois gras flavor, and finally I nearly choked on my post-exercise high fiber, low fat oatmeal bar when I saw the caneles. Sorry. After the caneles the rest of the post was completely out of focus.

You do have my mouth watering. Everything looks amazing and some bring a remembrance of traveling in France from driving through the country side seeing the walnuts being collected and to a street fair with tastes of fois gras and those strawberries at the local market place. Oh dear, I must travel here again.

Until just a few weeks ago, I was living in Périgord as an English assistant and I miss it dearly already. Wish I could have been in Paris for the fair, glad you had a good time celebrating your birthday there!
ReplyDeleteI feel like I was with you at the market I go to near where I live. Today I was sharing a punnet of Perigord strawberries with my daughter. At Christmas we have those figs stuffed with foi gras, delicious.Love the little water colour of 'les dames sur la place du marche' The Perigord is a lovely area you should come & visit...(I'm so pleased I have the comment box back to make a post) why does Blogger mess things up ?

ReplyDeletePlease do keep an eye out for any other regional fairs that might set up in Paris. Is Montmartre a recurring location? Making that climb up could be good prep for the feast at the top!

What a lovely time (personally, I am of the age that I think birthdays should be celebrated every day of the year!) Life is a celebration, especially if you live in Paris...you go girl! Thanks for amplifying my impression of Perigord which only comes from the series of mystery books by Martin Walker. Chief of Police Bruno lives in the Perigord region, cooks, grows veggies and chickens, and solves mysteries. Maybe he was at the fair, or at least his love interest Isabelle, who has moved to Paris. They seem alive, although only fiction. Thanks for the beautiful pictures and keep celebrating!
