You have inspired me to take an adult education French course (so far, I can only ask what time it is, and things like, "is that a pen? No, it is not a pen.") and I am working up the motivation to try to bake my first batch of macarons at some point.

ReplyDeleteAs to question above...plenty of French friends in DC area buy their shoes here as well as on trips back home (which are usually Italian, btw). Lucky recipient here. But as for hordes of regular French women buying Chanel ballerinas--no way.

ReplyDeleteI noticed when I lived in Paris that many French women carry name-brand paper shopping bags (Bon Marche, Hermes, etc) the way we carry a fabric tote. I thought this was rather tacky. Then I read "Bon Chic, Bon Genre" (the French version of "The Preppy Handbook" or "Sloane Rangers" circa 1980) and discovered that this is considered very chic. I save my paper shopping bags for carrying items to GoodWill.
