Rudi

I have taken many
Many photos
Of Paris' dogs.
I've painted many Parisbreakfast reader's darling dogs: Jack, Wally, Azela, Harvard, Bella, Bessa, Winston, Broady, Lilly, Lulu.
This weekend Jack's mom asked me what kind of a dog I had.

I had a Belgian Sheepdog named Rudi for many wonderful years.(This was not shot on the Riviera or Provence)
He was 13 years old when I lost him.
(Sardi Klein took this headshot of Rudi at 3 years old)

He had a Phd.
He spoke French fluently.
Va chercher, donne la patte, viens vite (come here, give me your paw, come quick) etc.
Rudi had sofa rights.
My neighbor said he should have been named 'Politie'. His manners were so refined.
I wish I could have a dog where I live now.
This sweet cushion is the closest I'll get.
I miss you Rudi.

  6. Rudi was loved.

I know it is hard to love and let go. But maybe you would do well with another dog? Just think you could take him to Paris, your own adorable model. Pink and green bow!

    Tender post Carol.

Thanks for this, Carol. I met his twin yesterday when I was on a beautiful, sunny trail run coming into a meadow.

I've come to love, delight in, enjoy & adore other peoples' dogs very much ....

  12. I lost my schnauzer when he was 18; I know how it goes.

I think New York still has some catching up to do to Paris in being chien-friendly. I don’t understand all these buildings where you can’t have dogs.
How can you not love a dog?
Rudi looked like quite a gentleman. I’m sorry.

  13. It's so sentimental to see you and your dog, I adore your photos.
I suppose people ask : why not another dog ?
but I can understand for many reasons...

We just lost our 14-year-old Siberian Husky, Annie, 2 weeks ago. She was a sweet, beautiful girl.
I might have thought, previous to losing her, that it would be hard to hear about friends' dogs' antics, or to see them. But it turns out the connection I felt with Annie channels through other pups, too, so that I feel closer to her.
    Your boy was a beauty.
    Thanks for the introduction.

  21. What a lovely tribute. I love that close up picture or you and Rudi together. I grew up with a cocker spaniel named Mops. She was with us for 16 years. I was grown and married by the time she died. Mom had a small silver gray toy poodle named Chiffon. Both very much family. I didnt get another dog till we moved here to Oregon. Annie, our red and white Border collie, is now Five years old. Time flys to fast, they should love much longer. Love your paintings & postings of dogs.

Rudi will always have a place in our hearts.
    Chien champion du monde, philosophe,
    professeur,
    voisin superlatif,
    camarade, gentilchien......
By the way, I see that it's my former sofa on which he was exercising droit de chien --
    what an honour.

Incidentally, you made a very handsome pair, as the pictures show.
    But then you knew that.

  26. What a great looking friend, Carol.
I'm sorry that he is not there now.
NYC seems downright hostile to me in terms of dogs - too bad - or maybe it has improved since I spent time there?

  27. don't forget the cats
My Tyger, who lived in Paris and learned some French (with a Cameroon accent), is now 17 years old and loves the painting of Le Cafe St. Andre (though he did not visit it in person; he was pretty much a chat de l'appartement).

    I love Rudi’s breed.
I have a friend who trains them for search and rescue. They are amazing. I’m a big fan of German Shepards, too. Our last beloved dog, Cholla, died two and a half years ago (at 16 yrs) and it seems like yesterday. He was a mix of what we thought was a Chow/Golden Retriever.
Thanks for your fun web site!

  33. Aw Rudi! It's always terribly hard to lose a friend quoique'il soit poilu, quoiqu'il soit pieds nus. Condoleances!

Meanwhile a little suggestion to cheer you up: Right now I am eating crepes with mascarpone and maple syrup. If you haven't tried it, you should! My first time. It was what was in the house.

Bisous to you and to Rudi wherever he is.

    Dear Carol,

Your post about Rudi is my favorite of all the posts I have ever read in the whole internet world. It made me cry. I found it moving, endearing in the way that only tributes to animals can achieve.

You gave us a big glimpse into your heart with this post. Thank you.

Animal lovers are the best people, IMHO.

God bless Rudi! And, my dog! Take good care.

    Warm Regards,
    Jo

    A very poignant post, Carol.
I grew up on a farm, in S. Jersey.
    Our childhood dog was named
    "Numpy," 'cause for some reason
she'd ;ost most of her tail.
Numpy usually slept in our barn,
but often, under my Dad's country store.
My brothers and I loved our Numpy,
as you did with your Rudi.
I do believe I met Rudi once.
